I have been munching on Great Value's Tropical Trail mix. It is nuts and fruit. The calories are outragious. Can it really be that bad to eat Trail Mix.

It's probably not that *bad* for you, but nuts have a lot of calories. But nuts (unless they're sugared or salted) are super good for you. You just have to remember portion control.

For 1/4 a cup it is like 140 calories. But that really isn't that much since there are alot of chunks of fruit in there. Which fill up the 1/4 cup really fast.

How's the sugar? In my experience with dried fruit, it seems it's normally dried with a lot of sugar. I wonder if that could be part of the reason. Just an ounce of peanuts is like 175 calories or something. And I think that would be a good bit less than 1/4 cup. I would think while trailmix CAN be healthy (assuming it's not packed with extra salt and/or sugar), it is a more calorie-filled snack than other options. Then again, it's probably more satisfying than lower calorie options so I guess you just have to weigh it out. I know I'd personally rather eat 5oz greek yogurt (110 calories) as a snack than 400 stalks of celery.

Dried fruits and nuts are good for you, but not really a good choice if you are trying to loose weight and are restricting calories. It is a great snack for weight maintenance or if you are trying to gain weight, though.

I would think 1/4 cup would mean here about 2oz. If you think of cup as recipient, than 1/4 cup of dried fruit is "lighter" than 1/4 cup of nuts, so less fruit fill it up faster.

Dried fruit and nuts do have lots of calories, so yes, portion control. If you want to munch on something, go for raw fruit instead.
  • Funny that you should ask this. I was reading nutrition news on a package this morning. What scared me, that the papaya in it has added sugar. As other's have said, a little bit probably isn't bad for you!!

Well its better than munching on a baked good. I had some this weekend and was shocked at 190 calories for 1/4 cup. UGH. The nuts are so high and so are the craisins.

I love raw fruit. It just goes bad before I get a chance to eat it all. So I thought I would try the tail mix. I'm not going to buy it again.
