Grocery Shopping Advice - healthy food options

Okay, I really hate grocery shopping and I really hate healthy food. PERRRRRFECT combo, right?

I am really looking for some advice on some good, healthy, protein filled foods that I can start buying at my grocery store.

What are some quick, filling breakfasts you have? Do you drink juice with breakfast or do those calories reall add up?

What about your other meals? I really, really struggle with grocery shopping so any of your favorite meals/snacks you guys would like to share, I would appreciate it!

Most drinks like juice, soda, lemonade etc, are pretty much wasted calories. If you are trying to stay low calories stick with water or add real fruit to your water. I try to stay away from artificial sweeteners but if aren't you can try crystal light etc for all the flavor without the calories.

I am still trying to make a bigger change in my shopping somethings I started to do are eating more veggies and adding it with a protein. I shop a lot at target and I know they have some salmon in the freezer section that you can microwave or I use my toaster oven and it's 100 calories and finished in 8 minutes so I pair it with a salad or some fresh veggies. Buy whole wheat bread (or I started with Natures Own Healthy White) but I try to stay away from bread if I don't need it (I love my spaghetti and rice to that's where I keep my carbs :D )

I also like for a snack peanut butter and apples. It's about a 250 calorie snack but it's a good hold over until the next meal. And breakfast of course eggs are good or I started buying cottage cheese, which at first I wasn't a huge fun but I bough peaches in water and half the sugar (no syrup) and just dumped a bunch on there and it's a good filling breakfast. that's about 300 calories.

I do struggle with lower calorie meals for dinner and lunch. I look at some people's diaries and I'm like there is no way I can eat only that I'd naw off my damn hand! lol. Good luck and please share any ideas you have!

Eggs are always good (cut the calories by NOT frying them, though). Add veggies for color.
Peanut butter is usually good, but I don't know how much it's cost lately.

Tofu is a blank slate as far as taste-it blends into the other foods. Good for stirfries (firm tofu) and smoothies (softer tofu).

Yogurt has some protein in it, and can also be used in smoothies.

oatmeal is my favorite breakfast. you can have anything for breakfast. If you like chicken or fish, eat that for breakfast. No rules just keep it healthy!

Greek yogurt, natural peanut butter on rice cake(I only use 1 Tablespoon 16 g), egg whites and vegies, no-fat string cheese(Weight Watcher brand), real oatmeal with nuts or now I add ground flax meal. I have a gluten allergy so I don't use bread, pasta, or cereal.I don't usually have fruits, but lately have added a few in as I am on maintenance.
  • I always catch hell for this but...

I work 2 jobs, I may get 1 day off in 2 or 3 weeks. I don't have time to cook so I get the healthy choice and smart ones. People want to talk about how bad they are for you, but really, take a look at what you were eating before. Although its not clean eating, it is healthier then the food I got fat on.

I just discovered steel cut oats for breakfast. I buy the plain kind and mix in whatever I have at home, like PB2 (the powdered peanut butter - 45cals / serving), bananas, raspberries, blackberries (any kind of berries, actually), some local honey to sweeten it up too. It's so delicious, and there are endless combinations, so it never gets boring.

As far as produce goes, I like to stick to basic veggies like broccoli and carrots mostly. I also like zucchini and squash. I steam them and pair with chicken or fish.

Good luck and I hope that helped!

I try to stay away from juices. For breakfast I normally have a yogurt smoothie. I use frozen fruit, almond milk and lowfat yogurt and a third of a pakage instant oatmeal. Whole wheat toast w/ PB. I cook a lot of chicken. Stirfry veggies. I'll do a protein shake every now and then.

Salads are about my favorite food. Mixed greens, feta cheese, sliced strawberrys (when in season) pecans, rasberry vinagrette dressing. Cottage cheese with ham and pineapple. Pizza Tortilla baked in oven. Brush with olive oil. Sliced tomato, feta cheese, fresh basil, a little mozzarella cheese to hold it all together. Pop in oven at 325 till melted and enjoy.

I still eat what I like foodwise but learned how to cut a few calories here and there with healthier prep.

Perhaps buy a new cookbook with healthy style recipes and start experamenting and have fun with it? Enjoy what you eat or the diet does not last long. I know.....it took me 10 years to figure it out.
