Working out with a chest injury?

I have major swelling in the cartilage in my ribcage. I can't rotate my torso or lift anything. For a couple of days I will be on pain meds, but after that I want to start exercising asap. My doctor said that I can as long as I don't twist or lift. Does anyone know any good workouts that I could do? I will be trying the recumbent bike at my gym, but I'd like some variety.
Thanks!
Serena.

  • If I was you I would take it as easy as possible in the beginning, maybe go for some walks, light jogs, or the bike at the gym. I am not sure how limited you are on movement but what about trying yoga or Pilates?

Walk and bike for now. Trust me. I have a more permanent situation with my chest that limits my workout (I can now do isolation exercises to work my upper body so long as my chest isn't worked at all), but it took many months for me to get to be able to even do those. You don't want to hurt any longer than you have to.

Take it easy for a while then later try spinning, leg work, maybe lightweight preacher curls.

    Thanks guys.
Yoga or Pilates are no-gos. Yoga is how I did this, I overextended in a prayer twist.
I think I'll stick with walking and the bike. Right now I can't even sit up, so it's still going to be a while.
