Whatreasonable time frame to lose 40 lbs?

Sorry-- it won't let me edit the title ("What's a reasonable time frame" is what it should read)

I gained the weight very quickly-- I'm not sure if that makes it easier to lose (I feel like it would?) I am already very active and eat very healthy (no wheat, dairy, red meat, or processed foods). I think giving up alcohol and nuts (I can not stick to a reasonable portion with them) will be the trick. Is 2lbs a week (I.e, a total of 5 months) reasonable? I have never had trouble keeping weight off/never experienced weight gain before, so I don't really know what is reasonable.

How tall are you? You are currently 160? You are not "that" overweight and so to lose the weight safely, five months is not realistic.

I've been losing slightly less than a pound a week and will hit the 40 pound mark at about a year.

I think you can do it if you at cardio exercises and lower your carbs, but also it depends how tall you are. Good luck.

    I'm 5 foot, 7 inches
  • 1 lb a week in a frame of 40 weeks is a healthy weightloss.

    Lol wut.

OP, please don't listen to this person. She has no idea what she's talking about. Eat carbs, but make them good carbs like vegetables, oats, whole grains, etc. Eat fat but make them healthy fats like nuts, olive oil, etc. And most importantly, plenty of protein and fiber. No need to cut out any macro.

Cardio is totally optional. I lost a lot more through lifting. The first two weeks I started lifting I dropped like five pounds. If you stick to your macros and calorie goals while lifting, you'll lose weight. Also, try to eat clean for the most part. The main reason being that clean foods are usually more filling and less likely to make you feel sluggish.

Type your current weight into a calculator.
    Press equals.
    Multiply by 0.99.
Hit equals and that is one week.
Hit equals again, that's two weeks.
Count the number of equals button presses for the display to show goal weight, or, to see a realistic goal weight in X weeks stop after X equals button presses and look at the display.

This assumes you are able to lose 1% of body weight per week in the medium term (i.e. excluding fluctuations like water weight, hydration levels, whether you are weighing yourself in the same state as the week before (monthly cycle, fasted/non-fasted state, etc.), plateaus, etc.

I did 30 pounds in about 5-6 months..and then very recently accidentally lost 10 more pounds after going through an emotional trauma (this occurred about a year after being in maintenance).

and you had the same amount of weight to lose she did?

The heavier a person is the more they can lose in a short amount of period. Somebody who starts off obese can lose 2+ pounds a week at first whereas someone who starts off at a lighter weight doesn't have as much they can lose and therefore it comes off slower.

At her height/weight and goal height/weight anything more than 1 lb loss a week and she will lose more lean body mass then she would probably like to.... unless she doesn't care about fat loss and only weight loss.

1 lb a week in a frame of 40 weeks is a healthy weightloss.

I think this is what you should be aiming for as well.
  • I would say a year, because there might be some weeks where you won't lose anything

well, im 5 foot 10 and started at 246 pounds. i lost about 10 pounds at the begining of the year, then stayed steady until september. in september, i got serious, and gave it another try, and when from 235 to 200 as of right now... so... i guess it just depends on your body, and how you work your plan...

Maybe at the beginning, but then that much weekly will be unrealistic, and your body will fight it and you'll probably find yourself not losing anything for 6-8 weeks.

So the question is, do you take it reasonable the whole way so the body is willing to lose it?

Or do you try to go faster and stall for a long period of time, potentially giving up in the end and gaining it back?

It took me 7 months, and it seemed reasonable. Good luck!

One thing that I would consider is what caused the gain to start with? Can you explain it or do you have no clue what happened? If the former then you can make a game plan pretty well but if it is the latter then you might need to schedule a doctor's visit. If all is well then I agree that 0.5 to 1.0 lbs a week is more realistic.

It took me about 10 months to lose 40, but I think age plays a factor as well. You might find it comes off more quickly at your age. In my younger years (making myself sound super old), I lost a lot more quickly, although I wouldn't say it was all that healthy either. Better to do slow and steady and keep it off than lose too quickly and dive back into old habits and gain it back. I think it takes your brain longer to process the lifestyle change and keep it.
