does being hungry mean that you're burning?

I have a lot of friends who are very physically active and athletic, and whenever I hang out with them, they're constantly hungry. They definitely eat more than the average person, so I know they're not just binging when we're together. I read somewhere that hungry people are always hungry because their active muscles are burning fat and calories much more effectively and almost constantly. Some of these friends are ectomorph long distance runners, extremely skinny and low body fat, but others are just active volleyball and basketball players who have a higher body fat but more muscle. Since they're always hungry and can eat whatever they want without worrying about calorie intake or gaining fat, does this mean that they are actually always burning calories?
