I just started going back to the gym about 3 weeks. For the most part I have been sticking to the treadmill and the bike. What would you recommend for a workout dvd for someone who is completely out of shape?

Bump.......to help the little lady out. What is a good starter DVD for somebody who is very busy and doesn't want to get frustrated out of the box because the dvd is designed for somebody who has been at it for a while? She really wants to do this, but her friends are either the type to refuse to go to the gym for anything other than chit-chat, or they are already basically in marathon form.

I found the jillion michaels 30 day shred very good- it only takes 20 minutes. And each exercise is only done for a minute

Agreed - I started with Jillian 30 day shred - I never did excercise before that and wasnt keen on the gym. She kicked my *kitten* to begin with but it worked. Am now a total Jillian convert :)

It's pretty low impact...but the Leslie Sansone dvds are great to start with. I started doing them as they work really well in small spaces, and my living room is tiny.

Borrow from your local library to see which ones you like the best and you wont get bored either. I like yoga and pilates dvd's the best.

I would suggest you tube, you can tey out a couple of vids and see which ones you like.
    My favorites include
Tiffany rothe ( do the 10 min booty shaking workout, its simple and fantastic for the core.)

Denise austin( pilates hips and thighs, ) i lost an inch off my thighs from this.
I also like butt bible, you can start on level one and work your way up.

Also on't feel disouraged if you don't get it straight away. I found it takes a few repeats before i can get the moves down. And you can always pause for a breather.

Fitness blender also has some great workouts, but i haven't ound any easy enough for me yet. I want to try
    http://www.fitnessblender.com/v/exercise-detail/Beginner-Boot-Camp-Workout-Easy-Toning-Low-Impact-Cardio-Workout/at/. Soon.

One note on 30 day shred is some ppl have complained bout sore knees. It is pretty high impact, so just be warned.

    Why not?
Most fitness dvds have very nice looking ladies jumping about. Why ould you not want t o join in?
  • Well done and keep up with your determination

I will recommend the 30 day shred and I did enjoyed it whilst I was doing it, and have now moved onto Shaun T - Insanity work out DVD, give it a go, I started doing it just by watching it on Youtube and then decided that I like it enough to purchase it.

Good Luck and keep going

Agree with Zylahe on checking out YouTube before purchasing anything - nothing more frustrating than spending money on something you end up not using. I'm sure there was an underlying knee issue to begin with, but 30DS did me in - it's not horrifically difficult, but it is tough on the knees - it's inexpensive though, and is even on YouTube - I've been able to use some elements of it.

I enjoy variety, and as some have mentioned, YouTube is great to test those waters in terms of which DVD to buy.
Personally, I think you could get by without it.....to each their own.
I need to mix things up....body-weight calisthenics, free weights, resistance machines coupled with swimming, tennis, walking, hiking, jogging and whatever else looks fun.
    ENJOY!

Leslie Sansone's Walk Away The Pounds series. Many of them are on You Tube (free!).
  • OMG......... I just finished day 1 level 1 of the 30 day shred........... What have I gotten myself into :s It completely kicked my *kitten*. I haven't done a juming jack since high school.

Can't wait until day 2... Even though it says upto 20 pounds in 30 days... Would be happy with 10-15..

LOVED 30 Day Shred. To not get bored with it, I would just do 2-3 days in a row and then either rest or go running or use the elliptical. Good luck.....it's an awesome workout!

    argh!

As long as you are going to the gym, walk over to the weight machines and USE them. Most of them will have pictures on them showing how to use them. If not, ask a staff member how to use it. eventually you can take a class or get a few personal training sessions to set up a more personalized workout--and maybe learn some free weights.

The gym can be your friend! Seriously, I do not really like exercise, but I love going to the gym because it me time, none interrupts me, I can think abut anything I want to sort out or just daydream. I have my music on and I zone out from the world.

The gym will probably do you a basic programme, or you can use sites like nerd fitness, bodybuilding.com (for women too - don't let the name put you off) or you tube to put together a basic workout.

For example today I did - warm up on treadmill, then squats and overhead press with dumbbells, hip raises, one arm rows, chest press, swiss ball crunches and then a random hill workout on treadmill. I would have also down reverse row on TRX but someone was on it and by the time I finished the hill walking I was spent! I built the workout from the bones on nerd fitness,

Took me an hour or so - and I loved every minute I got to myself.

    Good luck!

I've heard great things about 30DS and would love to try them...

but I can only speak from experience. That being said, New Rules of Lifting for Women or New Rules of Lifting for Life (Depending on age) are great. I'm doing the women one, and my Dad is doing the life one. It's not a video, but it's great info and great set ups for exercises, even for beginners.

Also, free videos that I LOVE are at www.doyogawithme.com
