how to get out of a plateau

Does anyone have any advice on an extra push to get out of a rut? I lost about twenty pounds all together (it's been an up and down journey) but now I'm just stuck. I've vamped up my excercise and lowered my calories but I'm still at the same point on the scale! I've also thought about doing some kind of clense but I'm so lost. I really don't know what to do.

  • Trying "shocking" your body. Change up the workout or eat more than you normally would to "shock" your body.

You should open your diary. Kind of hard to say with limited info.

    - make your work out more intense
    - eat less for a week or two
    - eat more for a week or two
    - vary how much you're eating on a day to day basis (look up alternate day fasting)

what i did was i ate as little as possible on a monday and tuesday, then on a wednesday and thursday i'd eat 1500 calories, then friday i'd eat as little as possible again and then i'd eat more on a saturday and sunday, sounds crazy but it helped me lose weight and get out of a plateau quite quickly, it prevents going into starvation mode and you can eat the foods you've not allowed yourself to eat :-)

I don't know what you do for exercise but add a burst of serious heart rate elevation for a short period of time. I'm a swimmer so I added 25M of as fast as my body can go. then I go back to my regular pace and at the end of my next freestyle laps I go as fast as I can again. It happens about 6 times. If you run, put a burst in there a few times. Zumba? Double time on something. More protein was already recommended. Hope this helps. It did for me.
  • I majorly upped my calorie, fat, and protein intake and it works so well- and I feel amazing!

Some more info about you would probably help get you better advice. Eg. what's your weight (and height) right now? How much are you eating? Do you know your BMR (basal metabolic rate) and TDEE (total daily energy expenditure)? What kind of exercise are you doing (and how much)?

Also - how long have you been "stuck"? Weight loss is not linear, and if it's just a couple of weeks, that might be just a normal part of your weight loss. Are you measuring your loss in any other way, like body measurements?

How many calories are you currently eating? Try a 15 or 20% cut from TDEE, it works for many people.

If you go to the search tool there are lots of questions that may give you answers on the same topic.

That being said each person asking the question is new.

If you want to open your diary, you will get lots of people telling you different things.

If you don`t open your diary you will get lots of people telling you different things.

Let us suggest you are on 1200 cals a day are you filling those cals with sugar/sodium are you eating back your exercise cals?

It really is difficult to give anybody advice without knowing how they fill their day x

What's your current weight, height, etc? If you are at a healthy weight, it can be very difficult to shred those extra few pounds and they come off very slowly. If that's the case...and even if it's not, start doing some resistance training for body composition.

I am 5'10 and 198 pounds. Here's the wierd thing, I got really into this fitness kick back in may and lost a bunch of weight. I moved, and reallllly dropped the ball. It's never been easy for me to lose weight but I was eating junk ALL the time and never excercising and I didn't gain ONE POUND?!? I don't know how.... but I didn't. I've been back at it for almost 4 weeks now and I haven't lost anything. I'm eating 1200 calories a day and almost never go over- and I excercise in a gym two days a week. At home I do a lot of housework and busy work (I've been on break from school). I don't know what to think. I'm just stuck.

I appreciate all the replies. I just can't cut my calories. I feel like I'm starving and weak all the time as it is. I didn'tk know about the extra protien. I always go over on that area (never by much) and thought that was a bad thing. I've currently been eating vegetarian only for the past three days (and some seafood), in hopes that that will give me a boost.

First, if you feel like you are starving and weak, then you are and you need to increase your calorie intake. I would suggest going by the MFP goal calculators and make your goal 1 pound a week. That will give your calorie intake amount. If your body is starving, then it is not going to let go of its precious calories easy.... go up with the calories and go up with the workouts and you should start seeing more results.
