And start lifting heavy weights....you will see fat fall off much faster.....it did in my case anyways. I only lost like 14 lbs, but factor in the muscle weight gain....
    I went from a size 14 to a 2-4

I would love to try heavy lifting but, since I have arthritis, I'm afraid that it would put too much strain on my joints. Do you know if I am right in this thinking?

    ask your doctor

^ Yeah, ask your doctor. They might be able to recommend a physical therapist or/and exercises. I knew a woman who was about 15-18 years older than me who had severe arthritis but she managed to work in weight training in her exercise routine based on suggestions from a physical therapist.

    Edited to correct the age...

I am able to do light weights but even the heavier ones of those seem to make my joints hurt more. As I get stronger with the aquacize that I do, I seem to be able to tolerate the heavier weights better.

Crunches and sit-ups are horrible on the spine.
(numerous studies show this, I can't believe that the military/le still use it as a measure)

Have you tried any Plank Exercises?

Diet gets rid of belly fat. A good core is the single most important part of any conditioning though.

Planks def the way to go!
If you cannot do them on the floor, then research modifications that won't cause additional back pain.

How long and how many seconds are you supposed to hold for an effective plank?

Until it burns. I started with 20 seconds and now hold for 90-100 each rep.

    Mountain climbers are effective also.
