How long will the gym you frequent be crazy busy? Mine is about 4-6 weeks after the new year.

I'm just waiting on The Resolutioners to show up on here. Thinking of setting my profile to private.

A couple weeks at best. Any goal that can be put off until January 1 can be put off forever.

BEST IDEA!!! I love it

I go early in the morning so it doesn't bother me...plus I started at Planet Fitness in January of this year so I can't say much (except that I stuck around lol) but it'll be my first year at Best Fitness so we shall see. I'm not too worried about it

Is it weird that I'm more worried about how many times MFP's site will crash with all the new people than about the rush of newbies at the gym?

i have an ankle sprain, and i can't really do much except body weight until near the end of January. I'll hit the gym then, when most of them have fizzled out.

sad as it seems....i will be one of the newbies at my local gym....but i give all the others who are going 6 weeks max...and they stop coming...i worked hard for 8 months (alone) and dropped a nice amount of weight...maybe i can hit the gym push hard when i see others working out.

Yeah, usually lasts about a month. I don't really mind though because they tend to stay away from the squat rack and just do the cardio and resistance machines.

I'll be one of those newbies, bought my membership last night. I asked the guy there and he said it usually last about 3-4 weeks, and is craziest right after work. I planned on going after 7:30 anyway, so I'm hoping it will be fine.

I agree- at least they are giving it a shot. Its better than doing absolutely nothing, in my opinion. It bothers me when people on here get all high and mighty about people who have New Years resolutions. Maybe, instead of belittling them, we could all work on encouraging them, because that might be what they are lacking to stick with it.

    These threads piss me off.

We all have to start somewhere. Sure, most will quit and not come back, but some will. The fact that most of you are wanting people to fail so it doesn't effect you, is just wrong on so many levels.

Maybe, just maybe, if you took one of the new resolutioners under your wing and helped them, and motivated them, they would make the change. But instead these threads get posted, and new people come on here, read it and it gives them a reason to quit.

We were all beginners at one time..
  • I run outside in NYC. I don't have new years resolutioners because it's too cold out for the faint of heart. We have the springtime and fall runners that only run when the weather is nice. I hate Central Park during those times because it feels like a race every weekend!

I will be one of the newbies at the gym also. Wife got my membership as a christmas gift but, I've been working out most of the year in my garage gym....free weights and elliptical (elliptical broke in october) also had a little down time this past fall for bone spur on the ball of my foot and a broken hand in november. Picked up my 24hr gym key yesterday so, will hit the gym starting this weekend. I'm sure I'll get the looks from the others at the gym like "oh great, another newbie" But, they will see

I agree with this. I have people on my FL from this year that started as resolutioners and are still going strong. It's sad that many will start and not follow through, but it's cool to see a few people stick around and commit to the hard work and see the changes and they can be the motivation for the next years' resolutioners.

Threads like this give them a reason to quit? You can't be serious. "I read a thread, so I better quit"

Dude, I've seen this routine happen about 18 times now. The gym will be busy right after new years and then thin out. Where I go, it lasts about a month-month and a half.

There is a massive, massive difference between people who are just starting out and the newbies that rage on here about their low carb/web md/Dr Oz/Oprah diet while never loosing a single pound but knowing all there is to know about weight loss and how what they're doing works for everyone so you need to do that, too.

Come on now. New and "new" aren't the same thing.

I am moving to a different country at the start of January and I am considering postponing joining a gym by about a month.
Just to avoid the crowds and so I don't look like a resolutioner.

Who said "Want people to fail"? It's going to happen. The gym will be extremely busy in January and taper off. I asked how long it takes your gym to do so.

    voila*

As to this thread, why let all the new people stress you out? Everyone started out as a newbie, no matter what time of the year they started. Maybe some encouragement would actually help some of these people stick with it..
