walking around the world?

I read a post a while back about someone who was "walking around the world" and that they'd soon be in someplace like Burma. Has anyone done anything like this? I do cardio on a treadmill and exercise bike. and I also swim, and I've thinking about going "across the US" (roughly 3000 miles). I think it would be fun to figure out where I'd be on my "trip".

Is there an app for that?
Did you use GoogleMaps?
Did you use any map at all? or just keep track of your mileage?

Any suggestions?

A friend of mine once met a lady (in 50s) in Dharamshala (India) who was walking around the world. She had walked across quite a few countries and had also covered quite a bit of India on foot.

There are very few people who have the guts and spirit to do something of this sort, but the few who do, I guess get to see a very unique and in depth view of the world and the cultures they encounter.

I think the OP was meaning to do itb'virtually'. She would use a pedometer to measure how far she walked on a treadmill or around her home. She wanted an app or website that would then show maps and pictures of how far she would have got if she'd walked around the world.

Thats no fun. It would be kind of like watching a travel show while working out.

"The Road goes ever on and on
Down from the door where it began.
Now far ahead the Road has gone,
And I must follow, if I can,
    Pursuing it with eager feet,
Until it joins some larger way
Where many paths and errands meet.
And whither then? I cannot say."

    This very cool - Thanks!!

I would love to do a trip in real life! But for now, I'm talking about a virtual walk and I'm going to walk across the US which is about 3000 miles. I'll be thinking about this more in the next few days and just how to do it so feel free to make suggestions.

GoogleMaps.com says it's 3325 miles via interstate highway from Bangor, Maine, to San Fransisco, California. Now that would be cool, but how about taking a trip to favorite places, to 'visit' friends, or to places I've always wanted to go? How about 'visiting' all of our national parks? Aaahh, so many places to visit, so little time!

I *love* this idea. Any app developers our there? Wouldn't it be cool to "visit" National Parks and clink something or other and learn all about them? I suppose you can do a dummy version using Google Street View & then spend a couple of hours reading all about the place you've just walked to. Seems like there must be a more streamlined way. I'd love to hear how you go about this.

Here is a website to track walking, running, and cycling across the USA. http://exercise.lbl.gov/index.html

It even shows you pictures of the countryside as you progress.

Just signed up for this. It looks great. Let me know if you want to be my partner on this. My goal is 35 miles a week

I would totally do this!! icimani, would you consider setting up a group?
Either way, I think I'll sign up on that website.

I guess it could be done using the Google Maps satellite photos (and then you could choose your route), but that would be tougher.
