Rest and work your upper body.
When you get your shoes, make sure the guy looks at your stride to evaluate you. Expect to spend around $100 USD,0 -
So, I have been convinced to rest. Though I'm still a little hesitant about the rolling pin idea. :noway:0

Not sure if a foam roller would work for shin splints, but sounds less painful than a rolling pin0

Rest and maybe even try a new pair of shoes.0

When I started jogging I also had shin splints and the only thing that helped was rest and a better pair of shoes.0

Good advice in general in this thread. RICE (Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation) are the best treatment for shin splints. A couple of additions:
Rest! And ice! Don't hurt yourself... Trust me on this, you don't want to put yourself out because of an injury (not that I know from experience :blushing:0 -
I've had these in the past. What helped me was rest and TONS of icing. You don't have to completely stop running, but I would definitely scale back for a while. For the inflammation I took ibuprofen and wrapping your legs with Ace bandages or using compression socks throughout the day helps as well.
Please take them seriously because ignoring them can cause stress fractures in the tibia.... from what I've read.0 -
As for the rolling pin, I think it would help. The foam roller may work too, if you can figure out how to roll the muscle. Freeze ice in a water bottle and roll those on the muscle.0

Stretching helps..before and after a run..0

When I need to ice down I use "Cooler Ice Packs" (igloo). They dont take up a lot of room in the freezer and they easily conform to just about any configuration; they can be rolled or folded.
For icing shins I wrap an ace compression a couple of wraps (for skin barrier), place an ice pack, and then finish wrapping the ace around. Dont leave ice on for more than 20 minutes are you can damage tissue. Always use something between your skin and the ice...towel, sock, ace wrap, etc.
I can run around the house while icing. ( it's not always possible to keep the leg elevated when you need a coffee refill or to take a leak)
Some of my buddies cut the foot out a sock so that they can pull the sock up to the shin & use as a skin barrier. Some also make their own ice packs by putting water mixed with rubbing alcohol and liquid soap in 1 gal zip loc bags.
