Advice needed - Buffet dinner

So so far today, I've had a piece of butterscotch, and brunch of a (supposedly less fat) sausage and a hash brown. I also plan to have an apple, and then we're having dinner at a Hogmanay party which is supposed to have a Mexican buffet.

I've never had a cheat day before, even Christmas, and it's served me well. I don't have much time to exercise today so how can I not over-eat at dinner? We're going to be there for over 5 hours and there's no one I know or my age who will be there... I know last year I just ate and ate and ate at the same event.

What is a cheat day supposed to be? Can I just splurge and not worry? I've lost some weight over the holiday season so far and since I've not gained anything during this diet I don't want to give in one day and put any weight on again...

Just eat till you are full. One day over isn't going to do much in the long run......

if you're faced with as buffet and determined to be healthy, then avoid pastry! stick to chicken wings, salad and maybe a couple of breadsticks. can you find out what will be served in advance? then you can look up calories and have some kind of plan before you go.
and try to mingle a bit, think of a couple of conversation topics beforehand (e.g. asking about holidays or New year's resolutions) and have a natter to distract yourself from the food.
good luck and have a fab time!

I am faced with having to stare down a tex-mex menu at least once a week. I eat the following:

Pico de Gallo (the chopped tomatoes with pepper, onions and spices)
one serving of guacamole (no chips) or 4 slices of avocado
Fajita meat and grilled onions and peppers (if you are lucky it will be shrimp/prawns/chicken)

I avoid the chips, beans and rices (I know, I know, the best part)

Grab a huge glass of water or club soda with a lime so my hands aren't free to eat.

    Have fun.

No buffets here--ever. However, from most professional advice and not conjecture allow yourself a GUILT FREE MEAL as you feel comfortable with. For me...twice a month. For others: one a week. Eat healthy and eat smart and eat till you are full. But what is healthy for you may not be for me.

Good luck and don't pay much attention here at MFP to opinion and conjecture...get professional assistance. A lot of tude an an opinion here. But, some great peeps!!!

It's a country club haha, big all-out we have this time of year, so it's likely stuff'll be a wee bit healthier. Shrimp, probably. Though the marine biologist in me wants to point out that prawn/shrimp = the same thing, different names (European/American). Thanks for the advice with the beans and rice!

...do you think I need professional advice, or was that general advice?

Pasty, check, thank you! Alas, I couldn't look it up - I did try.
