I would just say something like, "Killer workout!"

So not weird! High 5 and a handshake!

A smile is good, a "Great workout today!" would be OK, I'm NOT a fan of strangers touching me though, especially sweaty ones. I would not like high-5's at the gym.

Touching strangers lead to lawsuits...and restraining orders. If you are lucky.
  • i would love a high five at the gym, but i guess everyone is different. and i'd probably go and wash my hand straight after, but even so... it would make me feel most excellent!
  • I dislike many people touching me, and cannot even stand sitting to close to even my own family (mum, dad and sister). I am very "personal space" and only really hug with my fiancee and son - no one else.

In both cases (being the person giving, or recieving, the compliment) I would stick to a smile, a few words of enthusiasm/encouragement - "You were killing it there, well done!/You looked as if you were really pushing it!/Great job!" etc - however, if some stranger had tried to touch me, even just a high five, after they've been sweaty and I've been sweaty, I probably would freak out and walk/run away.
