Has anyone ever heard that Splenda or any other artificial sweetener is bad for you? I thought I read that somewhere? Thanks!

Yes I have heard and researched that splenda is not good as well as sweet n low and equal. I loved splenda too. I switched to Stevia "in the raw" and really cant tell the difference.0

I've heard it but I usually respond with "What ISN'T bad for you??" (I'll leave it to the other posters to fill you in on why it's bad.)0

Yea... but EVERYTHING'S bad for you anymore. I think our society's getting a little too obsessed with perfection.0

"Three petitions seeking approval of stevia or stevioside as a food additive have been submitted to FDA since 1989 from (1) a stevia importer in Texas; (2) the American Herbal Products Association (AHPA), a trade association; and (3) the Thomas J. Lipton Company. All three petitions were, in effect, rejected because of inadequate data on the safety of stevia and stevioside."
It would appear that most artificial sweeteners and/or substitutes are bad for you.
I use honey, real sugar or splenda.0 -
I have to agree with BetterVersion and Phoenix_Rising.
Everything is bad for you - especially when you go over board. I think in moderation and portion control you are ok. I use Equal all the time in my tea. I think it dissolves better than sugar and Splenda. But I keep it to 1-2 packets a day.0 -
I have also heard that it's bad for you, but have not removed it from my diet.... I just try not to use it in excess. Really, the only things I use it for now is my coffee and when I drink diet soda (maybe one or two 20 ouncers a week).0

Stevia is ancient and is not an "artificial" sweetener. Its been used in South America for CENTURIES as a natural sweetener and Japan has been using it in the common form we see here since the early 70's after extensive studies.
The FDA is a self serving government agency that makes many of its decisions based of what big corps (sugar, splenda) they will hurt/help.0 -
I believe it's better to use pure sugar in small amounts than using chemicals, which is what artificial sweeteners are.0

I don't like what I've heard with the research regarding splenda, I prefer Stevia and I really like Agave Nectar (I like baking with it, it's almost like honey! )0

I've used sweeters for years and years with no bad side effects - pink, blue or yellow!!!! :drinker:

Agreed.
Sure, artificial sweeteners are bad for you. But where's the proof that a "natural" sweetener like Stevia isn't bad for you? I know it's been used for thousands of years, but I've read bad things about it as well. People have done lots of "natural" things for thousands of years that have ill effects (smoking tobacco, opium, marijuana spring to mind).
Edit: Oh, and last I read, Stevia is still banned in Europe because of it's negative effects on fertility & other potential health impacts.
This is to say -- pick your poison. Everything is pretty bad for us, especially in excess.0 -

EVERYTHING is chemicals. That's what makes stuff. Remember your high school chemistry class?0
