It is dependent on your body, your goals, and what type of dvd are you doing. Some DVD’s have integrated rest days. There are people who say yes to rest days and there are some that go every day until they feel their body needs a rest. Depends on who you ask, if you are just starting working out I suggest you have rest days because if you go all out from nothing then you will get burnt out quick.

Personally I try to only have rest days when I need them, that may be twice a week to once in a two week period.

    Yes.

    Sometimes you need them.

    Listen to your body.

Yes. 1 or 2 per week. Every 12 weeks sometimes a rest week.

I do my Pilates (very beginner's stuff, so it's not huge on the muscle strain yet) almost every day and my cardio 4 times a week. I do space them out time-wise, though, when I do both. Pilates in the morning, treadmill at night. The muscles need time to rest and repair (which is why rest days are recommended - the body repairs itself in repose.)

Yes, one or two days per week. Also, I find my body responds best when I'm switching things up during the 5-6 days that I work out...If I'm doing something really intense one day, I'll do less intense the following. For example, mine would look something like this:

Monday - 3 mile run and calisthenics
Tuesday - 30-45 minute low intensity walk @ lunch/Strong Lift in the evening
    Wednesday - 1x8 HIIT (30 min) & calisthenics
Thursday - 30-45 minute low intensity walk @ lunch/Strong Lift in the evening
Friday - 2-3 mile brisk walk & calisthenics
    Saturday - AM Strong Lift
    Sunday - Off
