In your opinion what is a good protein powder to use after a workout that won't cost me an arm and a leg? I only have a Wal-Mart and a Dillons in my town so my options are pretty limited...

I would check out online prices and see what you can order.
Optimum Nutrition Gold Standard has pretty solid macros, taste is decent, price isn't too bad.0 -
I agree with Steel! Bodybuilding.com and Muscleandstrength.com are great resources. With the bonus of being delivered to your door. The Gold Standard Chocolate is not bad.0

go to bulknutrients.com
I use their banana flavour. It tastes nice depending on what you mix it with. It is barely bearable if you have it with just water but it tastes nice with milk (soy, skim) and in protein pancakes! It was cheaper than what I was getting before and I got double the product!0 -
Actually, after checking sidesteel's, go with his, its a bit cheaper than mine - im gonna try that next!0

Milk, 1% or skim0

Agree with this. I buy Optimum Nutrition through Amazon.
Edit to say that I have Amazon Prime so my 2 day shipping is free.0 -
What Steel said
I live in a big city with supplement stores within walking distance & I order online. I HATE going into those stores. I pretty much hate shopping altogether though
Bodybuilding.com is a good source for supplementation.0 -
. I HATE going into those stores.
"Excuse me sir have you tried our vitamins?"
"We have raspberry keytones here that will help you get extra lean. Would you like some? They melt fat".
/sigh0 -
check out http://www.supplementwarehouse.com/
I've had nothing but great experiences with them.
They instantly price-match.
And, there's a ton of little freebies (quasi-freebies--they add to the shipping cost), but they're great-- like their shakers for instance.
I like ON products. I've tried a bunch. I prefer then "natural" line of protein powders they make (only get the vanilla--trust me on this), that don't have aspertame.
I've switched off of whey onto vegetarian protein sources though. but these tend to be more expensive than whey.0 -

Ha ha oh yes. It's worse when you hear the unqualified sales staff giving outmoded/ dangerous bodybuilding or fitness advice. I am sure I am far from the only one with higher nutrition/ physical activity/ healthcare/ medical qualification than any of the staff. If they are persistent just ask them for details of the published studies and watch their best fish impression.0 -
Thanks, Everyone! Will check the sites out! Guess I completely forgot about ordering offline, lol!0

I was told recently that a post workout snack should be less than 300 calories and be 3 parts carbs and 1 part protein. Is there any truth to that? I'm wanting to follow-up my workout with a drink but most that I find are 3 parts protein and 1 part carb. Does anyone have a suggestion for a post workout drink?0

Yesss! Optimum Nutrition Gold Standard in Banana Cream is pretty amazing! :9 Loooove Amazon.com!0

fitrx.com i get Dymatize Elite whey and casein. one five lb tub makes 72 servings. they have 2lb tubs too. the five lb tub is 35 dollars which makes each shake .50 cents. ive tried all flavors. choc and peanut butter and cookies and cream do not taste like their title..vanilla is best for me . i usually add frozen fruit to it and water for a smoothie .0
-
I'm also curious about this. I have tried a couple kinds of whey protein and I think they are gross. Is there a different kind of protein powder or is whey the best?0

Not all brands are equal in terms of taste.
I'm now using Trutein and while it's slightly more expensive than ON, the flavor is off the charts.0 -

Wow! That sounds like what I am looking for! Good quality, great price, a big amount of product! Thank you!0 -
As far as I know, EVERY protein powder distributor will send you free sample packs of all their flavors if you email or call them directly. One company that is especially good about this is Jay Robb (I personally don't like the flavor, but I seem to be in the minority on that) .
It's a good way to get free protein and also be satisfied with what you buy when you do make your purchase.0 -
I recently started using Promosil protein powder. It is low cal and one scoop has 20 grams of protein. I mix it with skim milk and some frozen fruit...just delicious! I got it at GNC but you can also buy it online although when I looked it was more expensive on line, I don't why that would be.
I'm not a fitness buff so I don't know how well it stacks up against other protein powders but it had everything I was looking for.0 -

Honestly, none of this really matters and should be driven by your preference, hitting your calorie and macro targets for the day and workout performance. There is no magic ratios or time frames for this and those that promote that make a simple thing unneccesarily complicated. It is not even critical that you have a post workout snack. It's totally up to you.0 -
try going to amazon and searching for truestrength whey. i love it. it is about 60 bucks and my gym but you can get it on amazon right now for $20. you can drink it with water or mix it with others...it doesn't clump or taste gross. and i have tried a LOT of different protein powders. this one is by far my favorite.
to stretch the dollars, i do buy bodyfortress whey to put in my smoothies. as part of a smoothie, it isn't bad. i would not drink it plain though. you may think about this...doing a cheaper powder to put in a smoothie and buying a higher quality one to drink straight up0 -

I second Trutein.
I use ON for vanilla and Trutein for Chocolate. I have also heard good things about their PB and cinnamon flavors.0 -
I like Vega One. You can order it online as well in the States and Canada. Health food stores and some drug stores also carry it. 50 % of daily intake of vitamins is the main reason I take it. Also had fibre, omega 3 ect.0

This. I've been a fan of the Double Rich Chocolate flavor, and need to get the 4lb tub since i go through the 2 lbs pretty quickly.0 -

I agree with this statement. Optimum Nutrition and EAS are good quality protein. I just ordered a 5lb tub of Optimum Nutrition Gold Standard off of Amazon. It should last me for a while; well worth the money.0 -
vitaminshoppe.com has a few good protein powders. I use bodytech its resonability priced and taste good with almond milk. It also has about 110 cal and 24 grams protein, no sugar and low carbs0

I am in love with trutein. You get what you pay for. Quality & taste.0
