Working weights into my workout?

Last week I started up on working out again. In the late summer/early fall, I was doing P90 (starting out slow since I read P90X will kill a person if they're not used to working out!) and found that I was more often than not skipping the sculpting days. I loved the "sweat" parts, but never found the "sculpt" portion to be fun, nor did I feel like I was getting anything out of it. Mid-October I hurt my back and quit altogether. But now I'm starting up again.
So my question is, how important is it to incorporate weights into my workout routine? And how often should I be doing it? Do any of you have suggestions on good/ fun weight programs that I can do at home? Since starting up again, I've been alternating P90 Sweat and The Wave by The Firm. The Wave has some use of weights, but probably nothing that would classify as weight training, per se.
Thanks in advance for any help or advice!
