Tips on reducing wine consumption?

Hi All,
Just joined, lost weight on every diet going and am now heaviest ever! I love wine and have got into the habit of drinking every night, any tips on cutting this out, cold turkey or cutting down. I don't go overboard but know it is not a great thing for my diet! Been down recently as husband lost job which is probably why I have got into this habit instead of the healthy ones! Jo

  • That is hard! Cabernet is the healthiest. Maybe reduce to half a glass and plug ur cals in before you pour? Good luck friend!

make spritzers. half wine half soda water
  • i stopped drinking wine when I looked up the calories in it. omg.
Also, try switching to early morning cardio and notice that you feel drowsy and sluggish, maybe it'll kick you in the *kitten* and make you drink less at night

when I drink wine, I measure it out.
generic red wine is about 80 cals for 100mls. It seriously helps to know how much you are consuming.

surely (unless you're an alcoholic) the answer to drinking less wine is to just drink less wine. have water. or a nice cup of tea (i'm english).

Check out AA...it's not a 'diet' problem.
  • I'm confused myself......thinking about incorporating more red wine into my diet actually. But all in all, if your counting calories, just don't go over.......

What they said. Log everything into MFP. See where you are at in your calorie goals and macros. Unless you have a drinking problem, working wine in should be okay.

Thanks, yes I have worked out the calories and will cut down that way so it is within my allowance. I am so all or nothing which is why I always put the weight back on! Good lucy with your training for the half marathon. I finally got back to the gym today!

I think that it helps to buy a wine box rather than bottles, so that you don't feel obliged to finish off a bottle before it goes "off". Having a hot drink to sip helps as well (decaffienated tea/coffee, or one of those low-cal hot chocolates).

I enjoy sipping wine while we are entertaining, but no matter how hard I try to slow down, my version of "sipping" is closer to drinking.

So, I've learned to pour 1 part wine to 2 parts diet soda (diet ginger ale works well). After 6 glasses, I've only consumed two portions of wine.

Sometimes I alternate with a glass of only diet ginger ale.

I've always enjoyed sipping wine while I cook, but a good part of that seems to be the motions, because I've found that straight diet soda in a wine glass can be a good substitute.

I started mixing diet sprite with it, 50/50. That way if I really wanted a glass of wine, it wasn't full calories.
  • Great ideas! Thanks everyone!

Get smaller glasses, make them into spritzers, and avoid the alcohol aisle at the supermarket...

Right. So because the OP likes to drink wine every night and wants to cut down or cut it out and is looking for advice it immediately means they're an alcoholic and needs to go to AA? SMH.

I love wine. My husband and I will have a few bottles a couple times a week and maybe even more on the weekend. I don't wake up and immediately grab a bottle of wine and take a swig. If I don't have wine I'm perfectly fine with it because I don't need it. The OP isn't saying they need it they just want to know how to cut down/cut it out. For some people, like my husband and I, it's a part of their social activity. There's nothing like relaxing with a glass or two of wine some nights.

To the OP: as long as the alcohol calories fits into your overall calorie consumption you should be fine.

they actually coined a term for this called drunkorexia (saving cals for alcohol), and at some point I am sure the advising doctors on the DSM will include it!

she wants advice on how to cut down, if she can't just cut it out...there is a problem, and potentially addiction. don't be so shocked!

Stop buying it! If it's not there you won't drink it. If you are out to dinner, order ice tea!

That might be the case, but it's not necessarily so. Not everybody wants to cut out alcohol entirely, and there doesn't seem to be a health risk with light drinking as far as I know. I was giving advice about what worked for me, because I have cut down drinking in the past, but I wasn't drinking a lot when I cut back (a glass of wine most evenings). Now I have a small glass on some evenings and I'm happy with that.

    Suggestions:
Spend twice as much per bottle by buying better wine and then drink half as much.

Enjoy wine as a treat rather than as a part of a daily routine.

Volunteer to drive when you go out (and don't drink of course!).

Set aside some "dry" days in your week. (Go for a walk instead?)

I tried lots of things and in the end found the only way to do it for me was to cut it out completely.
It is calories I'd rather eat and I find moderation harder than abstinence.

Sorry, I am a big wino also but I just tell myself that if I want wine (which is 3-4 nights a wk) I have to work off the calories first, no problem!

I bought myself some 125ml glasses, which is a standard "small" size - you'd be amazed how much smaller that is than a usual glass! I also have a large glass of fizzy water alongside my wine to make sure I don't have a big gulp just because I'm thirsty. Only drink out of exercise calories, to make sure you're getting full nutrition from your food before you waste calories on booze. Make a bottle last at least two days, and it's recommended to have at least two days off drinking altogether.
