Lifting and protien for men trying to gain weight?

My husband is tall and very thin and is trying to put on wieght. He is one of those eat anything and gains nothing kind of people. I am sure the only way he will gain is by lifting wieghts and getting enough protien to build.
Here are my questions:
How much protein should he have?
whats a good protein powder to gain mass?
how many days should he lift a week?
should he do cardio?
he is defintly not fit but is a firefighter and its important that he gets in shape.
