I would be very careful as you could hinder your milk supply if you are overly restrictive with your diet.

i think people in NASA would be interested in this experiment
  • Yes you can. If you are strictly nursing go slow, 1 pound a week or less. If you supplement with formula or your baby eats solids well then you can up to 2 pounds a week.

Just what I was thinking, but imagine the milk flying everywhere.... that would stank eventually

I promise I am not stupid. And typos generally do not escape me.

All of the weight I have lost on my ticker has been while breastfeeding. It can be done.

Check out the breastfeeding support forum here on MFP!

It was such a good one though, too good to let slip by :)

On a more serious note, I am due to give birth in 8 weeks and do plan to lose weight... so I'm definately hoping its doable :)

Breastfeeding burns a lot of calories, and generally helps women lose the baby weight.

I've lost all of my weight thus far while breastfeeding. :-) I'm just now starting to introduce formula as I'm rejoining the world.

Don't create too much of a deficit, make sure to drink PLENTY of water, oatmeal and fenugreek are supply boosters for a lot of women. Also keep taking your vitamins. :-) Good luck!

Yes, some of my friends have and did a really good job on both.
Just need to add it in as cals burned....and eat those cals back, because you really don't want to start messing around with your nursing hormones, and interrupt this good thing:)

i lost 30 lbs in 6 months by breastfeeding my youngest. i wasnt counting calories or anything so i dont really have any tips for you - i know i upped my fluids a lot and ate more fruit/veg than previously.
ill be having baby #3 in about 10 weeks so im hoping i can do it again, but have more control over it since im logging food and exercising. itll also be nice to keep it all off this time lol

It does help some women.. but the hormones required to maintain milk production also help your body to hold on to the necessary fat to maintain milk production, especially in the trunk (lower abdomen, hips, butt, thighs). http://ajcn.nutrition.org/content/80/2/423.long

Don't count on breastfeeding to melt the lbs off.. but it's definitely doable while maintaining a supply! :-)

It will vary with the individual. For me, I always had a good supply of milk, so it was pretty straightforward (as long as I got enough sleep). Others have to watch their milk supply very carefully to keep it up.

Plenty of liquids, of course. One time I visited my mom and she bought me a case of my favorite pop. So I suddenly started drinking significantly more than usual. My poor baby would get a shower when she tried to nurse!

And... slow and steady is the key. Rapid fat loss releases toxins (that are stored in fat) into the bloodstream and can then be transferred to breastmilk and subsequently baby.

Kellymom.com is a good evidence-based resource for breastfeeding moms. Here are some articles from her site regarding weight loss and breastfeeding: http://kellymom.com/nutrition/mothers-diet/mom-weightloss/

And sure, it can be done. I lost 30 pounds while breastfeeding my last baby, and I'm once again getting rid of the baby weight. There are quite a few breastfeeding mamas here. Feel free to add me.

Yes it can be done, I'm doing it slowly as I am exclusively breastfeeding. She will soon to be 9 months and it's baby food and cereal for breakfast and dinner. I calculated my TDEE added 300 calories and then minus 15% deficit. I'm just doing it slow because I plan to nurse til she is 1.
