Recovering from Achilles Tendon Rupture

Hello Everybody,
In 2012 I tore my achilles and during the recovery have put on the 25lbs I lost using my fitness pal.
Just wondering if anybody out there has gone through the same and what has worked in terms of getting back into working out/sports? I'm 10 months since the surgery and have completed all the PT. Just weary of going back to playing sports and whatnot on a regular basis.

It takes longer for your brain to heal then your body, start slow and don't push yourself too hard. I tore my achilles and my MCL, it took awhile for me to stop using it as an excuse to not work out and I still get scared about hurting myself even though I know I'm stronger then ever before!0

I never needed surgery on mine but I've had a lot of irritaion with my left on. Ice ice ice is always my first start for recovery, I wear "the boot" at night sometimes, and of course stretching. Ibuprofen goes w/o saying. I am a biker and ride about 90 minutes a day, ( when theres no snow) or above 35 or 40. Problem is I pay the price after. Find what works for you and good luck!!0

I did my when I was 27 which was 9 years ago. I was in great shape at the time. I did it playing basketball. I had the surgery and sat on my *kitten* and I gained a ton of weight, prob closer to 40lbs.
Since I am not a professional athlete and my career doesn't depend on me playing sports I very rarely play basketball anymore and I never play raquetball. Unfortunately it scared me enough to not want to do it again.
I will still play basketball on occassion but I used to play 4-5 times a week.
After 10 months I think it was more mental limitations that physical. Especially if you did all of your PT. If you are over the mental aspect of it you are prob 100% good to go. The likely hood of rerupture after surgery isn't very high. I would do what you want without limits if you feel ready but I would recommend you ice it afterwards this will help with the inflamation.
Good luck on the recover.0 -
I didn't tear my achilles but did break my tibial sesamoid in September and started back running just a few weeks ago. I was in a boot for 3 months and the biggest problem I had was trying to get my foot moving again (very stiff from being in that position for so long).
Best advice, start slowly. What I did for myself is put my mindset back to where it was when I started running 5 years ago and not have the mindset of a marathoner (broke my foot 3 weeks before my race on my last long run before taper). What I mean by that was I started slowly, increased mileage slowly and controlled myself so as not to reinjure. You can get back to activity, lose the weight (I'm working on this also) and get off the couch...you can. Make the decision and start by walking or swimming (even better). Just be smart and don't overdo.
Good luck,
Cyndi0
