Everything tastes salty

Ok, rather odd, but the last two days, everything has tasted super salty to me. I typically eat the exact same thing everyday, but I was home (at my parents) and then house sitting for friends and eating more "unusual" stuff (aka not weird just not what I eat everyday). So, I had also been eating crap (hello entire box of wheat thins in one sitting) and not drinking much water. Kicked my butt into gear, went shopping, and started eating my normals. It's a lot of salad and veggies, and I make my own dressing with mustard, vinegar, and oil. It's the exact same dressing I used before the break, but now everything tastes really salty.

Has anyone had this happen before? Am I just super dehydrated? Is my body telling me I've consumed way too much salt recently? (I usually don't salt much of anything.)

Well, I had the experience of salty things tasting super salty after not salting anything for a while. But I don't think that's what you're describing...

But I'm not a doctor either, so maybe you are a vampire.

    I second this.

    And this: (http://www.doctorslounge.com/oncology/forums/backup/topic-1592.html)

The salty taste you are experiencing could be due to many causes. It could be that you are dehydrated especially if you are taking a medicine such as a diuretic, or drinking too much cafienated drinks (coffee, coke.. etc). Alcohol also has diuretic properties.

Other causes include infection in the mucosa of the mouth or a post-nasal drip due to chronic sinusitis. If you have an increased production of tears this could be a very rare cause. An even rarer cause is due to brain lesions such as a new epileptic lesion, brain tumor or a migraine.

If you are not dehydrated and do not have sinusitis then you should seek an appointment with your physician.

Does blood taste salty too? If so, definitely a vampire. WTF are you doing drinking blood?

Edited to add: I have to make a thread about this.

I'm not sure if this is directly answering your question but I have found that the foods I craved the most were heavy on the salt. I loved nothing more than a can of mushrooms with cheese melted on top. So no I'm trying to restrict salt. While that's probably impossible I'm trying this to see if it works. Obviously drink more water.

My suggestion would be to publish the sodium content on your diary and monitor it. I just made a split pea soup that is still under development. When compared to the Progresso version I had the day before I am down from over 1000 mg/cup to under 400 mg/cup. It taste pretty good and both had ham added. I love soups this time of year and am on a mission to make lower sodium soups that taste good.

Yeah, I have sodium added to my diary, although when I was being bad, I wasn't tracking much. Lots of salt and alcohol recently. My BP is moderately high, so I've been watching sodium (just not in the past week and a half). I was amazed how much salt there is in salad dressing and salsa (which I used to put on my salads because it was fat free). It's why I switched to cutting out most processed/prepared foods.
