Anyone go Gluten-Free?

I've had some intestinal issues since I was a teenager. They never occur in any type of pattern what-so-ever like, I can eat a salad one day and be completely fine and eat the same thing the next day and BAM intestinal cramping and severe pain. No fun at all. Well, I went to my doctor and she said it was IBS and told me to try to stress less..... right.... Anyway, I read recently that the symptoms I have coincide with Gluten intolerance or sensitivity. I was wondering if anyone has had similar issues and success with resolving them by going gluten free? Was it easy for you? What challenges did you face? and what did you eat?

Thanks!!

Your doctor is spot on about stress and IBS. Have you tried oily fish combined with probiotics and reducing known triggers (see IBS charities)? Have you ever done a detailed food and mood diary for a dietician?

Not a mood diary but, I've found that it happens even when I'm not stressed. Like 3 am when I was sleeping soundly...

I started a GF diet yesterday after having a lot of issues with stress which has resulted in some intestinal problems as well as some other issues. So, my doctor and I decided to give this a try to see if we can regulate the sugar in my body (apparently stress causes sugar spikes etc. etc.) and at the same time try to see if it relieves any of my long-time allergies (eczema, asthma, etc.). In addition to GF, I am also going dairy free for the first 2 weeks. My goal is to be GF for one month and then we can access the situation and see if I should continue or if I can bring back in some of those foods.

For me, this diet is almost like going on Atkins or that "caveman diet"....basically just eating lots of fish, lean protein, green leafy veggies, etc. For snacks, it is all about almonds and hummus (with carrot chips which is very yummy). I have popcorn on stand-by for a treat as well.

I've plotted out the next few weeks of meals so I can really have a handle on this. If I don't plan this out, I will never succeed. I really think that has got to be the key.

Maybe you could give it a try for a week and see how you do? There are so many GF products on the market now too...and that helps a lot! My local Giant has an entire GF section that is way cheaper than going to Whole Foods.
