Dietary Fail Moment

OK, so I was travelling back home on New Years day - a bit groggy and tired from a night of partying and made the bad decision to stop at a rest stop and get a quick snack to keep with my "eating small meals and snacks" schedule.

After perusing some snacks I pick up a Coconut Tastykake and see 170 cals and decided to buy it since it was under two dollars and I love me some coconut - it is my dietary kryptonite. I knew it would be empty calories, but 170 didn't seem bad....until I was walking out to the car and looked again and noticed the 170 cals was for fat calories!!! Doh! Total calories, 370!

I contemplated throwing it in the trashcan and eating the $2 loss, but the soft. moist coconut cake stared up at me lovingly and I couldn't do it. So I ate it. Needless to say, it was a lousy lunch, but I enjoyed the hell out of it. Won't do it again though (maybe...). It counted as lunch unfortunately and I did feel a little guilty.

Anyone else ever accidently misread the label and decide to eat it anyway? LOL. Two bucks is... well...two bucks.

Probably, can't think of any at the moment but when I get subway and check to see if the sandwich is already in the base often people have the serving size for their calories instead of the actual calories

Pretty sure I went through a debilitating depression when I discovered the actual calorie content in Panera sandwiches and salads. To think - I thought I was being healthy!!

If you enjoyed it, it wasn't a fail.

    This

    +1

I'm guessing the fail is that you considered wasting money instead of eating something that you enjoy? That would've been a fail if you didn't eat it.

I've done worse than misread, I've willed myself NOT to read the nutrition facts because I KNEW it was way out of my calorie spectrum. I didn't want to deter myself from eating that cake, candy, etc.

The coconut Tasty Kakes have not reached Kansas yet (stores here have just started stocking the Kandy Kakes, if you can believe that nonsense). I may need to give my sister in SC some shipping money.

I say not a fail if you enjoyed it and managed to fit it in.

If you didn't enjoy it - then waste of money and calories.

caloric density has nothing to do with nutritional value.

Also, to the OP...there is no fail...in the grand scheme of your "lifestyle" having a piece of cake for lunch one day is barely a blip on the radar. When you look at the big picture, not really a big deal at all, let along a "fail"

You were being healthy - you were eating sandwiches and salad, as opposed to fast food or pizza. Panera has some great options, and you can get them in 1/2 servings, as in 1/2 of a serving of soup and 1/2 sandwich, which are still generous in size and fewer calories. As long as you counted the calories and for the entire day you were under your calorie goal, you succeeded!

Pizza has more nutrients than a salad. And Panera *is* "fast food" by definition.

That's a pretty bold statement, unless you are talking about a specific kind of pizza or salad. And the high amounts of fat and carbs will negate pretty much any nutritional value. You can also eat quite a lot of salad when compared to equivalent calories worth of pizza. When it comes to fast food, I think it's pretty well understood when one is referring to unhealthy options at McD's or Burger King as compared to place where you can get food fast, such as Panera.

I'm not saying that Panera isn't a better option than other choices. I'm just saying that I had no idea the calories in what I, personally, was selecting was so high. They have a lot better options now - I'm referring to years ago when I looked up a sandwich that was popular at the time (that I was eating almost daily) and was shocked by the calorie and fat content. No idea if they still serve it. If I go to Panera now, I get the chicken noodle soup with an apple.

Don't hate dudes - just telling you about MY experience!

Carbs and fat don't negate nutrients. What an absurd statement. lol

    Fats and carbs are delish.
I'd rather the pizza and be happy than a salad and grumpy.
