Dating profile and describing yourself?

After a 3 yr hiatus on dating, I decided that ringing in the new year alone on my sofa with the cat was the final straw. So I created a dating profile on Plenty of Fish site, and run into a conundrum I need help with.
I hate labels and of course it wants you to pick a "body type". Out of the following, which would you pick if you were me?
1) Prefer not to say
2) Thin
3) Athletic
4) Average
5) A few extra pounds
6) Big & Tall/BBW
My current stats are: Height: 5'5" Weight: 220 (apple shaped at the moment)
I have already had someone comment to me "You are really down on yourself if you think you are BBW, and should probably change that from the pics on here." Some guys see BBW and run the other way instantly because it's a broad description(pun intended), LOL
If I back down to #5, I KNOW it will bite me in the *kitten* later when I meet someone and they feel I've misrepresented myself. This isn't my first rodeo with dating profiles, and I've had some pretty negative experiences in the past with guys. I don't want my "weight" to define me, but I feel like the nature of the venue forces you into a pigeon hole. If I try to clarify my stats in the ABOUT ME section, I am sure to draw ire from some who feel the need to make nasty comments (been there/done that).
I posted this pic, so there is a full body shot on the profile.

just put a full body shot in your profile, so many women try to hide it with just face pics. if you're honest it won't matter what category you put yourself in.0

Agree. Also, no matter which category you choose, people are going to have something to say about it. :laugh:0 -
I use "a few extra lbs". I've actually asked guy friends (ones I've met on PoF) which category I fall into. I did have a full body shot. Unfortunately PoF is not the best dating site to use. You get what you pay for!0

I feel you're a 5.0 -
They all would probably pick differently, the body shot picture is the best solution. What one guy thinks is big could be average...I mean isn't the "average woman" a size 14?
I also rang the new year in by myself, for the first time in a long time. It put some things into perspective. I am just not into dating until I feel more confident about myself. I have 40 pounds to lose but am still the same size in clothes. I am tall so it gets stretched out lol.
Good Luck on your weight loss journey!0 -
If you have to pick one, I think you fall into the 5 category. You're not tall. You're 5'5''.0

Ringing in the year alone wasn't awful, but after doing it year after year, it's getting old. Not saying I think finding a guy will "complete me" because I'm pretty complete right now. I gained weight after the last relationship ended 3yrs ago and crawled into a shell. I quit socializing and became a recluse almost. Felt many negative emotions about myself, and let them consume me.
Part of my weight loss journey here is to shed unwanted emotional baggage AND weight. The longer I go at it, I start to regain control of my life and perspective. There is no reason for me to crawl in a hole just because I'm overweight. That was a self-imposed prison that I subjected myself to. I might not meet anyone of value, or compatible - but I'm hoping to get over my social anxiety about putting myself back in the light.
I think #5 fits me better too, but I am sure to get a few snarky comments about how I'm "deluding myself" if I go with that choice.
::rolls eyes::
As for honesty, I'm point blank honest about it. You want my measurements? I've actually had guys ask me for them before, LOL.... I kept thinking I'd just hide myself away until I lost considerable weight, but life is passing me by and I'm realizing how unproductive that mindset can be.0 -
Get out there woman!!! Seriously. If that's what you want, do it. In the meantime, you're working on you.0

well... i did use that site before and ill tell u.. there are a LOAD of sleezeballs on there... seriously! i wouldnt use that one if i were u.. use e harmony or match!!! POF will have duds... seriously.. many of the men are already in relationships/ or they have major issues/ or they are horn dogs.... meaning they may be dirty... i got like 20 messages in a 1 hour period and i was like wtf! many of the guys are dogs i didnt even persue it.... at ur age i think match would work better.... because those men are serious....0

That was the first thing I thought (well, after "she's a 5") was "why Plenty of Fish? It's throwing WORST one!!! "Total bunch of
slimebuckets looking for casual encounters and the like. Do Match!!!0 -
I agree with most people and would encourage you to use a very recent full photo.
Plenty of Fish is not the greatest but not everyone wants to pay for a dating site. I know I don't. I used POF a couple of times and with careful screening and weeding through the d-bags, I met a couple of really nice guys. I didn't end up dating either one but they weren't sleaze bags at all. Just be totally honest on your profile and put out there what you want to get back.
Good luck to you!0 -
I agree with all the others ... #5 and a full body pic. You look great by the way.
I met my husband on shaadi.com LOL! Loooongggg story better left alone. Good luck with the dating site!0 -

I hope our cat doesn't take offense to this.:embarassed:
Just kidding. Good luck.0 -

LOL, thanks for the giggle... poor kitty.... lol0 -
You need to be honest, I am also on there (it sucks meeting people in bars.. I am getting old.. SIGH) and as a guy when searching for average, I see girls on there that are not average, they are bigger.. I know its mean but girls and guys go off looks then read the about me if interested, so you might as well put a few extra pounds. Just saying.0

Met my hubby on POF several years ago, and i was overweight then. I chose "prefer not to say", and made sure i always had a full body shot. In my profile i also talked about weight. Because during my online dating experience i had lost over 60lbs and was still losing. I didnt want to date an overweight guy. So i actually made a light hearted comment about how i hate to be a hypocrite but i do not want to date an overweight man, bcs im fast on my way to skinny...LOL. Anyway, i also said i wouldnt date anyone living further than an hour away... and i married an overweight man that lived 3.5 hours away that i met on there...LOL!! We are now happily married with a almost 1 year old baby girl!!... And im fat again! Go figure!!!0

I know it's a first glance and search criteria sort of thing. I'm just stuck between #5 and #6 and not sure which really fits. I'm borderline BBW and not really "tall"....but tagging myself as "few extra" doesn't feel very honest, since I clearly have more than a few extra. I almost feel like using the "prefer not to say" and then letting them decide based on the pics I provide.
I'm started to remember why I avoided this scene for so long, LOL
BTW, Greenrun99..... if 30 is OLD, I might need to go sit down before I hurt myself, haha ::rolls eyes:::0
