I was always thin at 6'1" 175 lbs until I hit 34 and quit smoking and quit exercising, and gained 50 lbs without even realizing it, although I felt like I was 85 years old all the time. I maxed out at 225 and at 37 my doctor told me I was pre-diabetic. Screw that! I went back to 175 about 4 years ago at 39 and got my energy and youth back.
Now I'm getting back on track again after gaining about 30 lbs, because I'm now a stay-at-home dad raising two toddlers who often insist on eating exclusively off my plate. It totally screwed up my portion control. When they did I would still be hungry and end up reaching for easy (relatively junk) food. When I'd make an extra portion, as Murphy would dictate, they weren't interested and I'd end up eating it all.
I didn't expect to lose that much the first month. I didn't starve myself, feel hungry, or miss out on anything I really wanted either. Although a couple times I had to stuff myself to cover my exercise and actually meet my calorie goal for the day. (I upped my goal too, trying to slow down the loss a bit and will see what happens.)
I originally signed up just to get a free calorie counter but this place has so much more to it! It's great to see people here who also know you can live a healthy *and enjoyable* lifestyle without totally restrictive self-torture diets or other ridiculous extremes, and advocate a permanent lifestyle change. I also decided to try the 5X5 Strong Lifts and see how it does for me, because I learned about it here. Thanks to the many people on the forums who make it fun and helpful to keep reading.
