  • it is interesting...i had read before that too much protein (especially animal protein) puts a lot of stress on the kidneys and can lead to stones and even failure. i have also read that the average adult does not actually need more than 30g of protein per day (which is obviously too little if you are strength training quite often), and the body can best utilize plant sources of protein when carefully consumed to create complete proteins! yet another reason i don't eat meat very often!

    I want to like this article... but it was printed in the "Opinion" section. And the medical citations are too brief and lack correlation, such as an interview with a researcher or citations from conflicting studies. I'll take it with a grain of skepticism.

    Yes, extreme, protein-only diets are bad for your system and potentially very dangerous and damaging to your body; however, increasing your protein while reducing carbs to a reasonable level is a healthy and medically recommended way to reduce fat and encourage muscle growth. We should be vilifying unhealthy diets like the Master Cleanse and the Cabbage Soup Diet, not healthy foods like protein and carbohydrates. Just my "two cents," as it were.
