Protein shake made me want to vomit...

So I bought Sun Warrior protein powder (chocolate) to help me with mid-afternoon cravings and also as a breakfast substitute. It was the best recommended considering my son has a milk allergy and I'm breastfeeding. Anyways, I blended it with a banana and 1 cup milk, but it was super disgusting! Tasted grainy. I could barely stomach drinking it. Any suggestions to make it taste better?

Your breast feeding son is allergic to milk?0

I add a half cup of yogurt to the ice and skim milk and make sure it's blended reallllly well. It adds a creamy texture, even my kids like it. Fage plain is my favorite, but I suppose any yogurt would work. Hope that helps0

Don't buy vegan protein unless you have some reason not to use whey. I assume you can do whey if you're using milk. If you're trying to minimize lactose, whey isolates are usually lactose free or very close- you can find out the specifics per brand. In the meantime, maybe try adding peanut butter to make it creamier, and definitely blend it longer.0

I'm so confused... Your son has a milk allergy, so you bought vegan protein, but then blended it with milk?
Huh?0 -
Don't use milk... use almond milk. I would put half a banana, 1 cup almond milk, one teaspoon butterscotch fat free sugar free pudding mix, and one tablespoon peanut butter. That will taste delish with the chocolate power. And it's healthy.0

Ya, weird, right? Something in cow's milk (like casein or lactose) is really irritating his stomach. So that means I have to cut it out of my diet. I can't eat anything with dairy or whey...so no regular milk (I drink lactaid now), no yogurt, no cheese, no chocolate, no nada. Seriously the hardest diet ever!0 -

Guess I should have clarified : It's lactose and casein free, so it doesn't have the proteins he's allergic to.0 -
Ah that makes much more sense. If you can use whey, do what MoreBean13 said.0

If your son is allergic to casein why don't you just purchase whey protein? Lactose is a sugar.0 -

You should know that 100% whey protein isolate has less than 1% of lactose/casein in it, and it should not irritate his stomach. Most protein powders are made with whey concentrate or a blend of isolate and concentrate, because that is cheaper, but if you read the ingredients and find 100% pure whey protein isolate, you should be fine.0 -

Are you sure lactaid is casein and whey free? I mean, it's like 99% lactose free but changes in the proteins are new to me......to the google-fu!0 -

There's several varieties of whey- typical "whey protein" still has some lactose. Higher-purity isolates are pretty much lactose free.0 -
I had a smoothie today too and put in a frozen banana. I don't know if the banana was unripe but it was awful. It has a really bitter taste. My suggestion is to get rid of the banana and put in other fruit. Raspberries and blueberries are a great combo.0

Can someone wiser than me comment on the lactose of Optimum Nutrition? I LOVE LOVE LOVE their Double Chocolate. I used to put in half a banana and have that with milk. It was like a treat. Need to get back in that habit ....0
