Starting on Protein Shakes

Okay, sorry for the question that has probably been asked a milliion times over, but I've done a quick scroll-around and haven't seen the exact question I'm looking to get answered on any thread topics, so here goes.

I'm switching from a 10 gr. of protein breakfast shake (190 calories) to a protein shake mix (Optimum Nutrition Gold Standard Whey) this weekend. I plan on using this as my post-morning-workout breakfast instead of the shakes. Now, here are the questions:

(1) I could use more calories, so does it hurt anything if I were to take a double-serving, thus making it 48 grams of protein and 240 calories?
(2) Is this something that I could take along and use one serving of this in the mid-afternoon for a snack?

If I do the above two, do I end up overdoing it with the protein? (I AM taking a multi-vitamin, in case that question comes up)

Most of the whey protein powders I've found are 2 scoops per serving - around 50 g of protein. So I don't think you will over-do it with the protein with 2 scoops.

I'm actually about to switch to whey isolate because I've done some research and it appears to be easier to digest.

    1) I always take 2 scoops. I use the same stuff you do. More than that in a 2 hour window is likely to be wasted by your body.
    2) If you must. Real food is better. Protein shakes are to hit minimum protein goals, and useful as a convenience. I'd aim for 1g/.5kg of lean body mass with protein, and not exceed 1g/kg of total body weight.

Assuming your end-of-day needs are being met:

    1) No.
    2) Yes.

    and bold:
That depends on the rest of your diet and your protein goal.

I take a protein shake with similar traits as yours (135 calories, 25 grams protein) and I eat a piece of whole wheat bread with 1 tablespoon PB, which comes out to about 350 calories, 30ish grams of protien, some good fats, and good carbs. Plus, I love PB, so any time I can get a bit of a fix to eat a PB sandwich, I try to find a way.

I almost always use a 1.5 x or 2x serving of supplement. Shouldn't be a big deal. Also yes on the mid afternoon snack thing. I have a hard time getting as much protein as I try to, so I often double dose, dose twice a day, drink one before bed (oh, the horror!) Actually, I've read things in support of ingesting protein before bed.

Congrats on kicking the breakfast replacement shake thingy special k type thing to the curb. Those things are a joke, if you're serious. (plus super expensive compared to powders!)
