What is the big deal with Whole Foods Market? There's one a few miles from my office and I have yet to visit. I was thinking of going after work today, but I'm not sure yet.

From what I hear, it is simply an overpriced grocery store.

Please, someone tell me why is everyone going crazy about this place?

Things you can't find in the regular grocery store.

Great wine selection, at good prices, believe it or not.

    The deli.

    Huge cheese selection.

I go on special occasions or to get wine. But in my case, the closest one is 50 miles away. :grumble:

my son (2 y/o) has milk, egg, and soy allergies. We go to places like it to get some products to make things like cakes and chocolate chip cookies that he wouldn't be able to enjoy otherwise.

It's a rarity for me to shop there...too far from home. But, I do shop quite often at Sunflower Market/Sprouts as it's right around the corner from my house. They also carry a lot of stuff that I'm particular about and can't find at the regular grocery store. They also carry grass fed beef and what not, though I buy most of my meat and poultry from a local farm store. I actually get a lot of my produce from Costco as we tend to go through quite a bit.

I honestly don't know if there is a Whole Foods near me, but I'm sure there is. I know I live in Oklahoma, but we are civilized. We have indoor plumbing.

ETA: Just saw OP is from Ok, so there is a Whole Foods near me...

I think I see a potential way to answer your own question. Maybe go to one first, and *then* if you still have questions, ask the MFP forum.

But seriously, yeah, it's an overpriced grocery store.

^This. I always feel very smug overpaying for crap I don't need. But I do shop there occasionally for overpriced cheese and wine. Oh and artisanal bread. I just can't fit much into my Prius.

Oklahoma is a fairly large state. It's possible it still may not be near you.

As others have said, it's just overpriced. Large selection, I personally love the store but I don't do my regular grocery shopping there.

    The bakery.

Seriously, that's the only reason I go to Whole Foods. The Berry Chantilly Cake is heaven in food form.

It's not *just* overpriced. There are foods there that you just can't find in other stores (or at least that I haven't been able to find in other stores). The question is whether or not they're worth the $$$ to buy them.

I don't get all the hype... however, I do frequent my local whole foods often for their gluten free selection because I have Celiac's... the regular grocery stores have an okay selection of GF stuff, but whole foods wins when it comes to GF!

Depends on what you need and are looking for. Whole foods has many of those random items that you cant find other places. Near me, they have the best prices on Bulk packages of protein bars( luna, cliff, etc). Though you will see a ton of moms that don't work and can afford to shop there daily...

They have a great selection of craft beers, different fruits and veggies, and a large amount of different types of fish and cheese from around the world.

Also - they have a great section of prepared foods including sushi, salad bar, sandwiches and pizza, that are great for a quick lunch on the go, plus give you the change to try something that you might not want to order a whole app or meal of, but want to try a scoop. I take a class on the weekends and there is a Whole foods close by to get a hot lunch at some place other than subway or mcdonalds.

I wanted to ask before I drove 20-30 minutes (in 5 o'clock traffic) to get there after work.

Some staples like milk and eggs are more expensive than a place like Fred Meyer. But most are cheaper than Albertson's.

Organic stuff is more or less on par with other markets. The question becomes do you want to buy certified organic everything or not?

As with anything else, use your head.

I went to one before and found it to be an over-priced grocery store. I was not impressed.

And I'm just glad that I am totally unaware of these fancy foods that you can only get at the over-priced store. It's better to not know what you're missing. :smokin:

Odd. I've seen several compelling arguments that would lead me to consider going, especially if I have never been before...and several more that are consistent with my own personal belief (however, based on actual experience) that it generally isn't worth it.

But certainly, if you're looking for justification to continue believing what you already believe, you're certainly in the right place. MFP forums are generally very good for that. :flowerforyou:
