FT4 Info

Just wondering. Iv been looking at the FT4 and I cant seem to find the only question that I have about it. I know they are great for counting calories and see how many you have burned and what not. But are they able to be used on a regualr basis to see about how many calories you burn a day?

No. The equations that heart rate monitors use to convert heart rate into calories are only value during cardio exercise.

If you are looking for something you can wear all day look into a Fitbit or a Bodyfit Media.

I haven't tried to use mine for a whole day. Good question.

HRM for exercise when your heart rate is up. FitBit or similar for all day use.

Unless you want to change the battery every week, I don't suggest it.

I wore mine all day once. I found it interesting to see my HR at various times throughout the work day. And yes I've heard they aren't accurate for calorie counting and such. But it did average about 100 calories an hour and at time throughout the day my HR was down to around 75 and other times it went up around 105. Interesting information for a geek like me :) I say do it for a day, batteries aren't that expensive.

You can but it'll run the battery down quicker, and from what I hear, it's a pain to replace it. What I did was wear it overnight once to find out what I burned while doing 'nothing'. It ended up being only 72 calories per hour. lol THAT encouraged me to get up off my butt more. I suppose you could wear it 24 hours on a 'typical' day with your normal exercise routine to find out more.

The algorithms are set for an elevated HR so if you wear it all the time you get inflated burn numbers. HRM's are meant to be worn during steady state cardio exercise only. You need a BodyBugg type thing for all the time wear.
