Natural or Processed Sugars?

OK. first off I know the difference...lol...My question refers to the sugars in milk. I use 1% milk in my coffee and in my cereal (SpecialK). When it is added I only have 12-14 grams left for the day. I don't stress over natural sugars that I get from fruits and veggies, which I also eat a lot of. Are milk sugars natural and what info do you have to back it up, cuz I am one step from finding a cow and testing the udder myself...LOL

I just bought some unsweetened almond milk (vanilla flavored), and unsweetened soy milk today at the grocery store. Will let you know what I think of them once I get up the nerve to try them.

  • Lactose is the natural sugar found in milk, people that are lactose intolerant (or intolerant to the more lactose concentrated cream... ahem...) actually have trouble breaking the sugar down this into simpler sugars such as carbohydrates, galactose and glucose. Although I have read the rumor that sugar is added to low fat milk to make up for the removal of the fat, this is in fact not true. The American Diabetes Association even recommends skim or 1% milk for diabetics. Milk has a low glycemic index so it does not fluctuate the blood sugar or insulin levels in our body the way a potato would. You can check out the glycemic index of foods at www.glycemicindex.com to compare the type of sugar in your favorite foods and see how easily they are processed in the body.
