Is it ok to work out right after having a strong cup of coffee? I only ask because I have heard people say that it makes your heart rate go higher than it should and isn't really a good idea...any truth to that?

  • Yes an old gym I used to work out at had coffee ready for the early birds. Ive used coffee, green tea and various preworkout powders for nearly ever workout I do. As long as you don't have an existing heart condition it shouldn't be a problem. I best cardio workouts come from coffee!

Any effect is going to be mild. There is some evidence that caffeine can serve as an ergogenic aid, but I don't know if the average exerciser is going to notice much difference. In any case, any elevated heart rate is not going to bother an otherwise healthy individual--worst-case scenario, if you use an HRM, it will overestimate your calorie burn, but even that is not likely to be that noticeable---unless you are doing double Kaf-Pow or something.
