Running/Jogging vs. Interval Training

I ALWAYS hear mixed things on this.
Back in October, I started this program that brought me up to 45 minutes of straight running, (treadmill, 4.5mph, 2% incline) then walk for 15 minutes at 3 mph. I enjoyed the accomplishment I felt after I would do all that, but I also somewhat dreaded going to the gym. Not completely....just groaned a bit more. Then I heard interval training was good for you, so I started that. (2 minutes of running at 5 mph, 3% incline, then 5 minutes of walking at 3.5mph, 9% incline for 60 minutes)
I guess my question for you all is....what do you prefer/recommend from personal experience that helps you shed the fat and gain the muscle?
