BMR? How to find it? Any other info :)

Could someone explain to me what exactly BMR is and how to find it. Also eating back exercise calories-not sure I understand. I would appreciate it, thank you :)

    BMR, or Basal Metabolic Rate, is the amount of calories you'd burn if you stayed in bed all day.

    "Eating back exercise calories" is a function of My Fitness Pal math.

    MFP gets you to lose weight by calculating your BMR (which you now understand as coma-calories) and your "lifestyle" (which is average daily activity level in calories plus what you'd burn in a coma). It then asks how much you want to lose per week, and let's say you said one pound. There are 3500 calories in a pound of fat, so a 500 calorie deficit per day would yield one pound of weight loss in seven days (500 * 7 = 3500).

    Because of this, MFP subtracts 500 from your lifestyle to yield a target caloric intake. If you eat this many calories, you will burn 3500 calories per week more than you consume.

    But what about exercise calories?

    If you exercise 250 calories above and beyond your lifestyle, you've actually just increased your deficit from 500 to 750. Instead of leaving it at a small increase in deficit, you can now eat two chocolate chip cookies for 250 cals and STILL lose your one pound a week.

    Thus, MFP is designed to use food as an incentive for exercise to aid your weight loss.

    TDEE is Total Daily Energy Expenditure, which is just what it sounds like - - it's the TOTAL amount of energy in calories that you expend in a day. That includes your body processing toxins and growing hair, and also brushing your teeth and walking up stairs. BMR is only hair growing and toxin processing, respiration, circulation, etc.

    A waitress who works doubles has a much higher TDEE than an office worker, but both, if of equal build, age, etc, have the same BMR.

    Women: BMR = 655 + ( 4.35 x weight in pounds ) + ( 4.7 x height in inches ) - ( 4.7 x age in years )
    Men: BMR = 66 + ( 6.23 x weight in pounds ) + ( 12.7 x height in inches ) - ( 6.8 x age in year )


    Metric BMR Formula

    Women: BMR = 655 + ( 9.6 x weight in kilos ) + ( 1.8 x height in cm ) - ( 4.7 x age in years )
    Men: BMR = 66 + ( 13.7 x weight in kilos ) + ( 5 x height in cm ) - ( 6.8 x age in years )

  • I have pretty much figured out alot of key points to this weight loss thing, my only question is if TDEE is accurate, why doesn't MFP set you at a lower rate and why did I gain at my TDEE? Just wondering. I eat about 400-500 under my TDEE to lose...

    Nothing is razor accurate unfortunately. People can be X height and Y weight and be full of muscle or full of fat. That makes a huge difference. And, when you say (in terms of activity level) that there are only four choices, you're going to have a histogram, not a curve. So you might be toward one end or the other. It sounds like you've trial and errored your way to good figures!
