SHARED: FOUR PITFALLS OF DIETING

FOUR PITFALLS OF DIETING FAILURE
There are plenty of ways to fall off your diet, but Jessica Bartfield MD, a nutrition and weight management specialist at the Loyola Center for Metabolic Surgery & Bariatric Care, has come up with a list of the top four reasons why many diets fail:

1. Underestimating How Much You Eat. It's a fact that most dieters underestimate the number of calories they consume. The best strategy for making yourself more aware of the actual total is to keep a detailed food journal.

2. Overestimating Calories Burned. Exercise has a lot of positive side effects, but to burn enough calories to lose 1 pound a week, you'd need to exercise vigorously for at least an hour every day.

3. Infrequent Eating. While cutting calories is important, you should try to eat a small, nutritious meal every 3 to 4 hours to keep your metabolism going. Setting the goal of eating breakfast within an hour of waking up is a good place to start.

4. Not Getting 8 Hours of Sleep. Sleeping less than 6 hours a night increases ghrelin levels, which can stimulate your appetite for high-carb, high-fat foods. Not sleeping enough can also elevate the anti-catabolic stress hormone cortisol, which can lead to weight gain.

True Strength Moment: Planning is as important as willpower if you want to realize long-term success on a diet. The pounds aren't likely to fall off the scale quickly or easily. Take your time and approach weight loss the right way, with regular exercise and consistent eating strategies. Anything worth having is worth working for.
