Pasta Weight After Cooking

Out of curiosity I weighed a pound of Spaghetti after cooking and draining it- it went from 16 oz to 41 oz, so it ended up slightly more than 2.5 times the uncooked weight. I read somewhere the rule of thumb for pasta was it doubled in weight so I thought it was interesting that a 2 oz serving is actually 5 oz cooked. Just passing it along.

  • Its because the water gets sucked into the pasta. Thanks for sharing, anyhow!! :-D

Do you still log it as a dry weight?

I know WHY it weights more. Just posting in case anyone was trying to figure out a serving size after it is prepared since the information on the box is the dry weight.

Not all pasta will absorb the same amount of water, and it will be different depending on your cooking conditions, it would be best to stick to dry weights for accurate measurements and divide the final product by number of servings you made.
