Losing weight after Medications cause gain?

I am trying to lose weight cuz the medications I had been on for Migraine-Seizures caused me to gain "alot" of extra lbs. The Dr switched me off that med I had been on Gabapentin and now am on Verapamil and is helping lots but having a really hard time getting my body programmed to lose the weight now after being on that. Wondering if anyone else has had success losing weight that they mostly gained due to medications. And what kind of foods they are eating to help them lose it.

I am right with you on this one!! Hopefully someone can help us with this. I had gained over 70lbs, I was on 6 medications and aftermuch research and my doctor finally admitting it, it completely shut my body down and I feel like I have to restart my body in the sense of burning fat and having a higher metabolism. I have switched my pasta to brown rice pasta which feels MUCH lighter on the stomach and I digest it much better. I drink more water and started adding lemon. I also have started protein shakes which have helped alot which digestion and getting nutrients. My body doesnt digest solids well so I have to be quite selective to what I eat or it hurts and my stomach will feel swollen. I hope you find the answers you are looking for, best wishes!! :)
  • I was recently diagnosed with Grave's Disease (hyperthyroidism), and the medicine has not only lowered my thyroid levels but my metabolism and immune system as well. As a result of the lowered metabolism ( it was always high and I could eat whatever) I am gaining weight for the first time ever. Luckily, I'm only about 11 pounds up so far, but have read online and in chat rooms and forums that some people with this have gained upwards of 70 pounds. It is difficult for me to have this new issue as I am a Zumba Fitness instructor! I have started on a nutrition path, watching my caloric, carb, and fat intake. I've been eating more fresh fruits and veggies and have also been eating whole grain breads and pastas. The myfitnesspal site has helped me keep track of my eating and exercise. I'm continuing to teach my Zumba classes but am wanting to add in something additional, like P90X abs since the majority of my weight gain has been in my stomach. I work at an elementary school and had a student ask me if I was having a baby! That opened my eyes! Best wishes to you both! I hope you meet your goals too!

I had been on Gabapentin for Shock like Migraine headaches and Neuritis in my neck. I gained between 35-40 lbs over a period of a little over 3 months. I was worried about it and talked to my dr and at first she tried lowering it and adding a blood pressure med propanolol but I have asthma and that blood pressure one messed with my asthma and I was still gaining weight. She tried topomax cuz that helps you lose weight and causes weight loss but I couldn't take it got hives and throwing up and diarrhea with that. So now she took me off the Gabapentin it is helping me quite a bit being off that weight wise and she put me on Verapamil that one seems to so far so good work. Doesn't really cause any gain or any loss. But have a long ways to get bk down to where I was before meds and my metabolism has definently slowed quite a bit after being on the other medication. I had read up on it and around 80percent of people get some kinda weight gain with it but it works for alot of different medical problems just has the weight stuff that comes with it. It did work really well for headaches and I felt really great, just I gained too much weight while on it. Hoping this new one Verapamil will not cause any weight gain and I can work my way bk to the weight I used to be or a little bit less.
  • I hope your new medicine works for you! The medicine that I take for Grave's is called Methimazole, and I only take 15mg per day.
