Hello Fellow MFP:

I just started MFP for the first time on Monday. I am trying to hard to do this, but am already discouraged.

I have been obese for several years. I have had 6 back surgeries and now have a rod in part of my back. I also have a a disc acting up in my neck. Due to all the surgeries I have had, I have put on even more weight due to mainly sitting aroudn alot.

My problem is that I don't know what to do as far as exercising. I know there are a lot that I am unable to do due to my back not allowing me, but there has to be something that I can do. It is so discouraging to try to eat the right food, but not be able to do anything to help work it off. I gave my doctor a form to fill out to allow a trainer to help me. But I am sure the trainer is going to tell me he won't work with me because of my problems. I also have a pinched nerve in my hip, which if I walk for to long of a time I get severe burning and pain, so that doesn't last long.

I also had the Lap Band Surgery a few years back, and I did lose over 60 pounds with that, but then I couldn't exercise and then had to have another surgery, which laid me up again. I so much want to succeed with this program. And I am going to try my best.

Does anyone know of any type of exercise I could possible do that would help me? And even if you don't. I sure could use all the friends and motivation I can get. Thanks in advance for you all you help.

First up congratulations for resolving to change. That's your first victory, so be proud of it.

Hard to know what to suggest regarding exercise. Swimming, perhaps? Or maybe some sort of aqua-aerobics? The thought being that perhaps with the support of the water, it may be less likely to aggravate your back. Whatever you choose, it probably goes without saying that you should closely liaise with your doctors. A referral to a physical therapist would probably be a good move - they should be able to help you determine your limits and capabilities and choose an exercise program to match.
  • Hello, feel free to add me as a friend. I am new here also and like to chat with lots of people. Sometimes I wonder if somedays this isn't my social life. I'll support you the best I can. Do you realize that just by wiggling your leg, shaking your arms, swaying back and forth can be a form of exercise? Any movement is great.

Thank you for your recomendations. When my doctor fills out the paper for the trainer I will see what he can help me with. Also, I have joined the YMCA, but also had carpal tunnel surgery, so when I finish the recovery for that I am going to go the water therapy. I am so determined to do this, just aggravated with all the obsticals I have to deal with. But I will succeed. Especially with the help of the friends already replying to my post. Thank you very much

You could do punches as in the cardio work that jillian michaels does in her 30 day shred. Basically all you do is gett in a wide squat like stance *not super deep* and the punch across the body to the opposite side. Do it hard and fast and let your anger out and that will get your heart racing and hopefully would help you lose a few pounds. Talk with a dietitian and just search all over the internet for personal trainers. You might have a trainer willing to help you across the country and how they would be able to help you would be through a video chat or videos. There is so many things you could try.

I would suggest trying some light water aerobics classes. It would take the pressure off your back and give you a work out until you are stronger.

Also I found these (google is my friend!):

There are a few places to start. Hope it helps!
  • I teach water aerobics. Many of my participants have lots of issues check with your doctor then gat in a class. The water is the way to go. Even if you get in and just walk it is great for you.
