Hi everyone. I first started to use this site, mostly as a calorie counter a few months ago. I had some sucess for periods of time, followed by periods of self sabatoge. My sister told me I needed to get friends on the site, she said that has really helped her (she has lost 16 lbs!!! (Go SISSY). I'm currently 2 lbs over what I was the day I first joined, so I have to lose 2 to get back to 0 lbs. Frustraing. I just spent a week in Tuscany, eatting lots of fabulous, but not low calorie food. I'm recommited to working on this, and getting it under control, I just have to find a way to stay comitted for more than 2 weeks at a time. I know I'm better about things like excersize if I do them with friends, so now I'm going to try to do this with friends too. (I don't actually know how to add friends though, so please be patient while I learn the ropes.).Thanks in advance for your help.

    Morning,

I hope using the site to have friends who can help you endure your frustrations and celebrate your joys will help.

If you click on my screen name it will take you to my bio page where you can request to be my friend. That's how adding friends is done.

    Have a great day!

    Hi there,

Having friends on this site will really help you to reach your goal. I have lost 14lbs since the start of the year using this site, along with calorie controlling and exercise. I hope that you reach your goal and you can add me as a friend to get you started if you wish.

welcome aboard! You can do this,,, just choose to do it, and do it.

This is easy - here's all ya' gotta do:

Cook smart, lotsa good filling stuff. Some fruits, lotsa veggies, some grains-cereals, some starchy stuff, some lean meat. Almost nothing fried (and certainly nothing batter dipped & deep fried), and very very little pastry/cakey stuff.

Count your calories accurately with the food guide here, and stay as close to your calorie allowance as you reasonably can. If you cook properly you shouldn't be too uncomfortable on the calorie allowance MFP will give you.

Get some exercise - work that gym, walk a little every day, something - that's a huge help. Remember to log your exercise and eat at least some (I eat most) of your exercise calories. Exercise is a self-feeding phenomenon. If you push yourself to do just a little today (it's supposed to be hard,,, it's exercise ) then you'll feel better about it and it'll be easier to do it again tomorrow. Then in a week you'll be able to do more, and it'll start to get fun. In a year you might be running 10k's,,, it's up to you.

    And drink your water!

That's it, piece o' cake. Wife and I have been doing it for about a year now and we've done well. Lost about 130 pounds between us, and we're in much better shape.

I mastered the yo yo for many yrs....and I know how difficult it is to change that pattern. If you really want to do this, YOU CAN!! Get serious about e-v-e-r-y-t-h-i-n-g!! Measuring my food on a scale was a real eye opener to me.....and then, I had to be honest with myself, about food, exercising, the *entire* process. Maybe focus on one day at a time to start with. Make small changes and not too many at first, that may be overwhelming. This is not a diet, it is a lifestyle change. Work harder at making better food choices, with each meal....and prepare and plan ahead of time as many of your meals as you can. This will be less frustrating on what to eat and less time consuming. Good luck on your journey!!

You can add me as a friend as well! Join a group on here and check in as often as you like! We are all here to cheer you on!

How much are you exercising? As much as a part of me hates the idea, regular exercise and plenty of it, really is the key component to this challenge we all face together. It boosts your metabolism, strengthens your body and heart and makes everything easier, including day to day living.

That doesn't mean you have to work out like a madman every single day :noway: , it just means do something every day. I found that once I accepted that fact and started doing it, the pounds have just started to drop off. Slowly, but surely. I am pretty flexible with my calories. I'm not doing anything drastic there. I try to keep my net calories between 1400 and 1800. My 'goal' is 1700 a day and that seems to work for me. I like the days I exercise, because I usually eat a little more. Remember, that's net calories. I usually eat around 2000. That's definitely do-able.

Today, I got to the gym at 5:50 am, like I usually do, for my 30 minute workout, and they hadn't opened yet. Bummer. I was so disappointed! Actually disappointed! Me! The first thing I thought of was that my net calories will go up if I don't exercise :grumble: , so I'm going to go after work, which ticks me off, because now I have to think about it all day (that's why I work out first thing in the morning - so I don't have to think about it). I'm finding the more I exercise, the faster I lose, provided I keep my net calories in line. I'm exercising about 30 minutes every single day, with the odd day where I don't exercise - usually a weekend day where I choose to be a sloth and sleep and play video games - I tell myself I'm 'recovering'. Someday I"ll feel like ramping that up a bit, but for now, that's what I'm willing to do.

It's all an experiment to me. Like my friend says, "My body, my science experiment". Just think of the past few months as an experiment in maintenance. Now you're onto the 'losing' experiment and I'm sure you'll do just great! There are lots of friendly challenges on this site. I believe there's one on right now to lose 7 pounds by the end of March. May sound like an impossibility, but honestly, if you 'only' lost 4 pounds, wouldn't you just feel fabulous? 'Slow and steady wins the race' keeps going through my mind these days and that's how I plan to proceed. I figure a pound a week on average will be just fine for me. Sometimes I'll lose faster, sometimes I'll lose slower.

I had a bit of a glitch the weekend before last in which I didn't exercise for 4 days and ate more than my net calories. Unfortunately, it showed on the scale and has taken me until now to get to where I was on the scale. My body, my science experiment. I thought I could get away with it and the results prove I just can't. Sucks to be me. Oh well. I'm back on track again and I'm going to learn from that little episode by reminding myself that if I do that kind of fooling around, it will just take me longer to get where I'm going. Punishing myself isn't productive and could lead to another little episode. I've had enough of those over the years to realize I CAN overcome it [the temptation to do nothing] and the sooner I get back on the wagon, the sooner I'll get to where I want to be.

TimTam [I think that's her Username] has lost over 130 pounds and that's where I want to be in 2011. Her approach is similar to mine. She's flexible, realistic and doesn't demand perfection of herself. I think that's important in getting over the yo-yoing we tend to do. Do your best today, plan for tomorrow and don't worry about yesterday.
