Beverages: To Count or Not to Count?

Which beverages do you count toward your daily water intake? Which do you not (alcohol is a given), and why not?

I don't track my water intake.

I track liquids that have calories.

I don't track liquids unless they have calories. As long as your urine is a pale yellow you're sufficiently hydrated. Drinking a lot of water has no health benefits and too much can actually be harmful.

I track water as water, and anything else as what it is. Caffeine and alcohol dehydrate, and anything with those in them should not be counted toward your hydration for the day, IMO. Juice maybe, but I don't drink juice except for V8, too many calories in fruit juice. I still don't count the V8 toward water hydration. I'm in florida, I drink alot of water 10 cups is a normal day, more if its hot or I'm hot. I feel better with it.

Water as water and I log anything else under beverages.

If you are wondering how much hydration you are getting per day it depends on what kind of foods you eat. That's why the whole "drink 8 glasses" of water is not really accurate because if you are eating a lot of vegetables and fruits then you are getting natural hydration.
  • Hi there, I'm a nurse and when I'm monitoring patients fluid input and output we include all types of fluids including tea and coffee. Although caffeine based drinks do act as a Diuretic (make you pass urine more frequently) we still include it as it will still have an impact on your circulating volume. Focus more on the colour and volume of your urine to determine whether you are sufficiently hydrated as environmental and biological factors can change this such as perspiration. The 'rule' that you must drink 2 litres of water a day is guideline but not a fact. Hope this helps x

I count water as water. Everything else goes into the food catagory.

If I tracked water, which I don't, I'd count water as water, so I'd track all beverages that weren't alcoholic.

If I add anything to my water for flavoring (Crystal Light packet etc) and it is no longer clear I don't count it as water

Agreed, if you leave things out then you won't get an accurate picture of where you can cut calories. That said, I'm not the best about adding the drinks when I go out.
