Runners? Pain to the side of my foot

I will preface this and say I know the best thing to do is see an MD but my husband started a new job recently and our insurance won't kick in for a while. I was just looking for opinions or hear other people's accounts of similar injuries.

I have been running since August and have completed a 5k and 10k. I am currently training for a half marathon at the end of February with a group and every Saturday we do our longer runs. Two Saturday's ago, we had our five mile run. I've run 6.5 miles before, so five was not my max. Did the 5 and felt fine. That night and Sunday, felt fine. Monday at work (in heels mind you) I felt totally normal. Monday night, New Year's Eve, I was getting dressed and started feeling a sharp pain in my right foot. The pain was on the outer side. It's not the same pain I've experience with Planter's. Anyway, it was odd but I tried to ignore it. The next day it was worse and needless to say, here I am 7 days later with the same pain.

A few things I've tried. Been icing and rolling with a frozen water bottle since the day after the pain started. Foam rolled my calf to ensure it wasn't just tightness. Tried using a heating pad (caused more pain than good), soaked in epsom salt bath. Of course I've not been running at all since it started. I've only used the stationary bike which has caused no pain.

I only feel pain when I apply pressure to walk, no pain when I touch my foot in any area. Has anyone experience something similar? I have heard people with the same pain say it went away within a few days, so I am just wondering if anyone else has had this happen to them and what the outcome was. I would HATE to have to quit running, so I'm hoping it's temporary.

This might sound strange... do you feel you need to "crack" your foot, as you would crack knuckles? I had the same pain, and strangely enough it went away when I changed shoes.

I had something similar a few weeks ago. I think I had my shoe laced too tight during a run and to make a long story short I had pain in my left foot while walking. Mine was in the highest part of the foot above the arch. I couldn't make it hurt by massaging the foot or pressing a certain point. It was only during walking/running that it hurt. It took me about 2 weeks before it was good enough to try using again. Did a quick run on it and it was still a little sore so I waited again. Then 3 days after that I'd say it was totally fine. No symptoms at all. Total down time was about 2 and a half weeks.

Just continue to do what you're doing and be patient. Avoid doing anything that causes pain, keep up with the icing and stretching and of course any cross training that doesn't hurt it should be fine. You'll probably be up and running around like normal before you know it. Just don't get impatient and use it before it's totally healed.

are you wearing minimal running shoes? Could be a stress fracture of the 5th metatarsal
  • No, I run in New Balance running shoes that I was fitted for.
  • Would a stress fracture cause bruising or tenderness to the touch though? Because I've experienced neither!
  • bump?
