Weight Training With Carpal Tunnel?

Hey guys, I could use some advice. I love weight training and using free weights. However, in the last year I've developed really bad carpal tunnel. My doctor wants me to get surgery, but I understand that just gets rid of the symptoms and not cause. Along with losing weight, I know that gaining muscle strength can help the pain. The trouble I have is the utter inability to physically hold free weights! There is just no strength in my fingers anymore. Does anyone have tips or tricks that can bring me back into the game?

Can't help with the weight lifting part, but I had the surgery because I got to the point where I lost the ability to move my thumb. Best decision ever! A week after surgery, I could open the toothpaste tube, sugar packets, twist lids and all kinds of stuff that I didn't have the strength to do before. I am a musician, and was absolutely terrified at the prospect of hand surgery-put it off for years, and have been kicking myself since. My hand hasn't felt this good in like a decade.0
