Help resisting home baking!

So my flatmate has just moved back in after 6 months of being overseas and she bakes. A lot. And she's good at it :(

We have at least one type of sweet baking treat in the house ALL the time. Eg yesterday the last of the lemon cake and chocolate chip cookies went so she made a double batch of afghan cookies (chocolate cookies with chocolate icing).

I do so well all day and then come home and the house smells like chocolate, and there's jars of cookies sitting there on the bench tempting me!

I'm trying to budget for a cookie now and again but does anyone have any tips on how to resist the temptation (I looked up afghans, and the size she makes them they're 200 calories a pop)? Or something I can keep in the house that's a lower calorie sweet treat that I can eat instead of the cookies?

I also don't want to eat something now (was considering like, a banana) and then end up with not enough calories after dinner for a cookie because I ate something now! (Going to the in-laws for dinner so can't pre-log dinner as I have no idea what we'll be having)...

Yep - same as resisting any other temptation.

    Wait 5 minutes.

When those 5 minutes are up, wait another 5 minutes.

then another and another and another and before you know it, the whole day has gone by and you resisted. :-)

been doing this every single day for the last 90 days today regarding a 20 year addiction. You can do it! if need be, break it down to 2 minute intervals.

Let us know how it goes!
  • I am a chocolate addict I am pretty sure...and I love to bake. I also have just realize I am pre-diabetic and have been working really hard to exercise and keep carbs down. But sometimes your body just needs the trace elements in chocolate. Just not in a whole cookie. Sometimes when I crave chocolate, I open a bag of chocolate chips and have just one or two chips with my coffee. that's enug to ease that craving without adding a lot to my calorie count. But it's hard if the whole apartment smells like a bakery...burn a candle!

Ask her if she'd be up to the challenge of making some of the hungry girl treats. Or some soda cake. Be honest with her and let her know you're trying to watch your figure. Most people who enjoy cooking welcome a challenge because cooking gives them a chance to be creative. Then she gets to cook and enjoy the sweets, and you can too :)

I'd like to report I'm heading off to bed having successfully resisted cookies even though I had the calories left after dinner if I'd wanted one!

I think most of it was the accountability ie If I'd had a cookie it would have been lame coming back here to report a failure. And also yeah, just distracting myself for long enough in short bursts :)

    So thanks guys!
