I'm reasonable motivated when it comes to working out and going to the gym, but I have quite bad anxiety which I find sends me a bit off at the gym a lot of the time meaning I don't go at all, or leave part way through my workout... how can I get through this and have the confidence to stay at the gym to get through my workout and enjoy it???

If the anxiety/confidence issues have to do with other people watching... the secret is knowing people don't care and aren't watching. They're there for themselves just like you are and I can almost guarantee no one will even notice you if you aren't doing anything special (yelling.. jumping up and down waving... ect) Good luck!

Make a really energetic playlist with songs you love and motivate you! make sure you dont leave before the end of the playlist, whether its 30mins or 60mins. And when you are home make a new one for the next day. I'm not at all ashamed to say that I he caught singing to myself all the time hahaha

You could stay in the house and never leave, order groceries to your home, and just sleep, eat, poop, and watch tv, and that way you'll never see anyone appraising or judging you. Or, you could learn to embrace a mantra like "so?", "whatever", or "**** it", and realize that no matter what other people think, it's you who has to live this life, and you only have a short time to do it. How about not wasting it and instead... just make yourself happy.

Regarding your anxiety at the gym, what's the worst that could happen? Some *kitten* thinks you're too fat or have too little stamina and makes a snide remark? Not the end of the world, sweets. They have to live with their negativity, you don't! Or even if you had an anxiety attack, it too will pass. Sure, it's scary as hell at the time and it feels like your heart will explode and you're going to die. But recognize these are just temporary feelings and will pass. And you'll be okay. And then you can go back to doing stuff. There's really nothing to fear.

Everyone has anxiety to varying degrees so you're not alone. To help you come up with mental strategies to redirect your anxiety-provoking thoughts, counselling would be a great positive step. Something you might try next time you feel like running away because it's too intense: take some deep slow breaths in and out through your nose, and count to at least 10, then re-assess. Are you still feeling as anxious? Why? If you have a reason, address it. If you're not sure, try another count and deep breathing. Focus on a positive goal to keep going. You might find that you can do a lot more if you give yourself mini goals to work towards that don't feel as overwhelming, for instance, "I'll keep going until the end of this song", then the end of the next song... and so on. Working out to happy-making songs also helps tune out others so you can focus on your own experience.

Life's short, spend more energy living it, enjoying it, than worrying about it! :)
