Wow - how did my posture get this bad?! Through 4 pregnancies and breastfeeding and lack of exercise, I'm just now reaizing how BAD my posture is!!

I've started Jillian MIchael's 30 day shred, so I'm getting exercise in - just wondering if anyone has tips for remebering to keep your back straight throughout the day. I'm a mom, so I'm mostly on my feet (as opposed to an office chair). Any help would be great!!

There's a trick with a yoga belt where you make a harness that doesn't allow your shoulders to slump over.

If you have a smart phone, you can set a timer to go off every hour that reminds you to stand up straight. Or you could do it any time you hear "mom".
  • We are shaped by our habits and surrender to our dominant activities. The wonderful posture of a toddler is relinquished as we get older. Our lifestyle bends us and the sensorimotor part of our brain tells us it's normal. Until that message gets displaced, it directs our mobility. Our body shape morphs and our muscle and fascial condition adjusts.

A wake up call must be sustained while the body awakens, reconditions, reshapes and relearns. New awareness and habits need to be formed by repeated activity to create muscle memory. It won't happen lying passively on a massage table while somebody works on you. Ideally it should be integrated into your daily activity. While you are bending down, picking up toys, kids, groceries, carrying the same around, walking, driving, cooking the message needs to be reinforced.

I'm going to recommend you take a look at the PostureJac as a simple, inexpensive device that can be integrated into your life as your partner of change. Passive braces are like casts that restrain and replace muscle activity. You need consistent activity patterns that create muscle memory and improves conditioning.

It isn't a fashion statement, but its good to wear around the house, but then again, if your posture improves, a whole new fashion world awaits you. And it's wonderful under a backpack when you're carrying kids around!
