I'm fortunate that I have this big bar thing out in my backyard. I'd need to get a stool to reach it all the way, but I see potential with that bar.
I would love for the first time in my life EVER to do a chin up on that bar. However, I dont know how to even start in the first place. Do I just hang from the bar and keep trying to lift my 308lb bulk everyday or is there some technique I would need? I have never done a chin up or even gotten close so I have no idea how to do this.
Thanks for helping me get to my goal.

http://scoobysworkshop.com/pullups-for-total-beginners/ Apparently this is one of the best ways. Jump up and then try to lower yourself slowly. You're still working the muscles but just in the negative motion, i.e. lowering yourself instead of raising yourself. Also resistance bands are the next best thing. I've heard a lot of people say that these two methods are superior to the assisted pullup machine at the gym.
Or this old post which seems to have tons of info:

The best way to get started with pull-ups is to begin with let-downs. Seriously. Ge a ladder or stool that will get up to the bar so that your arms are already bent and your chin is over the bar, hold yourself in that position while moving the stool out of the way, then try to SLOWLY let yoursefl down. Repeat until you can't do it again. Do the same thing tomorrow and the next day, even if you're sore. This exercises the same muscles as the pull-up. I imagine this will be very difficult at the start, but if you keep doing it, you will build strength.0
