What Upsets You The Most About The Biggest Loser?

I get upset when they go simply by the number on the scale and send someone home crying if he/she does not lose weight. These people are obviously going to be building serious MUSCLE mass by working out 6 hours a day, and my opinion is that with all the money that show brings in, the least they could do is measure body fat percentage instead of pounds on the scale!!! Grrrrrrr :grumble:

I see what you are saying but honestly the results would most likely be the same. with the severe caloric deficits they are on it is next to impossible to gain any measurable muscle mass.0 -
No one gains "serious" muscle mass in a week especially on a severely restricted diet.0
-
The most upsetting thing is that they didn't take my friend on the show.0
-
the people that watch it.0

Nothing. It is a TV show that I don't watch.0
-
That they don't show ALL the previous contestants. Of course if they did, the show wouldn't draw anymore because it would show that 90% of the contestants gained a significant amount of weight back.

I agree with you. I HATE SCALES! I dont use them, they can get a person so down on themselves while it could be just muscle mass!0
-
The fact that they use dangerous methods to lose weight0
-
Everything, it's disgusting.0
-
Too many fatties, and without their shirts on! :noway: Ew...
Uh oh...0 -
The fact that all the emphasis is on the work in the gym, and not on diet. We all know that weight loss occurs at the table, not in the gym.0
-
I watch the show and actually love watching people transform themselves. They do teach people proper eating habits, they even teach people how to cook healthy foods.0
-
Is this still a thing?0

I'm very mixed on it. I've only watched this last full episode and I like the fact that it at least is trying to push weight loss and exercise. At some level I have to applaud that regardless of the details. I can deal with the screaming, crying and throwing up. I mean, the contestants signed up for a reality show, right? Time to put the big boy pants on. The thing that really bothers me though is that they're pushing extremely fast weight loss and its neither realistic or healthy, and that is what many viewers are trying to emulate (as seem on our very own forums on a near-daily basis). I know it doesn't sell but it would be great to see someone out there pushing real health and real science in popular media.0

The fact that they dehydrate for their weigh ins, a week isn't a week, and there are no goals that have to do with "fitness" only "weight" loss. well weight can be lean mass, and by the show's standards, those who lose the most weight, that is, fat mass lost PLUS lean mass lost PLUS water weight lost = win. How about a bodyfat % loss? instead of weighing them, give them MRI scans and pinpoint their body fat percentage, and the person that loses the most of THAT should get $$$

What she said.
I used to watch it but it became increasingly overdramatic and I got tired of all the junk food, product pushing, low fat mumbo jumbo. Yes I consider Yoplait light yogurt to be junk food, in case anyone is wondering what I'm talking about.0 -

This makes me upset the most about the biggest loser. Please stop supporting this terrible unhealthy show.0 -
I love the show. It is a bit extreme how quickly they lose the weight, but watching the transformations is amazing.0
-
Nothing because it is a TV show and I have more important things to worry about.0

I haven't watched these current seasons very much (I stopped watching when this barbie-like trainer replaced Jillian), but I noticed there was a child on it during a commercial? I just hope that he doesn't get judged on the same basis as the adults. I'm hoping he can just do the motions to lose the weight and go home healthy... If not, that would be just terrible.0

I was pretty horrified at how bad of shape these people are in. A 25 year old man that can't run on a treadmill at a 12 min per mile pace for more than a couple minutes? How did you do so much damage to yourself in such a short time? I do love seeing the transformations, although I fast forward through all the weepy "emotional journey" crap.0

Like post on MFP0 -
Well, it is called "The Biggest Loser" and not the most muscle mass or fitness or anything like that. I've never watched it personally.0
-
i agree...something about that show just doesnt sit right with me. Chris Powell on extreme makeover weight loss edition has a much better method and I like that show alot better0
-
I hate how they treat the contestants like they are stupid and pathetic during the first few episodes. Especially Jillian. I don't think she sees the contestants as fellow human beings. I hate how disrespectful she is to obese individuals. It literally makes me sick. I do, however, like the Jillian Michaels DVDs and find her encouraging when she's just being a trainer and not going for dramatics.0

I hate seeing people get upset that they only lost 20 LBs in a week. ONLY 20 LBS IN A WEEK? Omg, life is over! And they think life is over because their TRAINERS are pushing them to lose even more than that. Like Bob said on Sundays episode "You're like the biggest guy here. You got these other guys over here losing close to 30 LBs. That should've been you, that's why you're not happy with 21 pounds"....It seriously makes me wanna vomit hearing that. And speaking of vomit, they're only losing that much weight because of all the vomiting during workouts.0

The people who watch it. A friend of mine has a coworker on the current season. She keeps saying how she is an inspiration. Why is being morbidly obese and on an extreme weight loss reality show inspiring? The obese woman sweating her butt off running on the treadmill at the gym is inspiring to me.0

I'm upset that these people get to work out 6 hours a day. Try doing that with a full time job. I'm guessing all their meals are planned by trainers. They don't force themselves to choose healthy stuff. I'm also guessing all that healthy food is paid for by the show. It must be nice....0
