Sleep and weight loss

Hello everyone, I have a question regarding sleep. I'm new here, so I'm not sure if this has been posted before.

I have insomnia, and usually sleep like 3 hours at most, my question is how important is sleep in the process of loosing weight? I've tried pills, breathing excercise, teas, everything and it doesn't work. So I just got used to it to the point that I'm not really tired during the day.

Also, during the sleepless nights I usually get hungry, or more than hungry I crave for food sometimes. Eventhough this never happens during the day. So I was wondering what kind of food should I eat if it's the middle of the night.
I usually have some calories left in case I want to eat at night, but I'm not sure what kind of food. I know healthy snacks would be the answer, but I'm not quite sure what that means.

I would really appreciate the help. =)

i struggle with the same thing. i'm not sure that the foods i eat late in the night are best for promoting sleep, but they're what i eat when i'm up into the wee hours.

i love love love roasted veggies, so i do:

    broccoli
    asian sweet potatoes
    cauliflower

if that doesn't cut it, i sometimes do popcorn (not microwaved) or a cheese stick.
