Depends on your workout as well. But usually chocolate milk or bananas are considered to be pretty good since they contain carbs that are quickly absorbed by your body. My all time favorite post-workout snack is an apple with PB. yum!

BCAA's or Hydrolisized Whey Protein within the first 20 - 35 mins of completing resistance training. After the 35 mins then have your simple sugars and carbs in order to not waste your workout.
  • My favourite is salmon nigiri - low fat, protein to fix my muscles and white rice for the glucose. And fish is BRAIN FOOD so obviously it must make me lots cleverer right?

The best foods to eat after a workout are the ones that fit within your daily calorie, macro and micro-nutrient goals and that you like to eat.

You don't need to eat post workout if you don't want to. IT doesn't provide anything special if you do so.

You know that insulin spikes from protein digestion too right? I'm guessing that's why you're spacing out your protein and your carbs (to avoid an insulin spike that'll hurt your post-workout HGH levels).

Nutrient consumption has also been shown to be more optimal OUTSIDE of the magical "30-60 minute nutrient timing window".

I like greek yogurt with some all bran cereal mixed in and banana, and some honey. The yogurt is my protein, the cereal and the banana are the carbs. MMM. Even if it's not an ideal snack to someone else, it's great for me. (did I mention it tastes amazing? haha) You could even add some natural PB for extra flavor, protein and fat.

Really? It's not good to eat protein after a workout? I've always seen and heard that it was. Did a bit of research myself and got "EAT PROTEIN OR YOU'LL DIE!#@#!" pretty much, haha. Does it matter if I usually eat it an hour after a work out? I feel like I'd probably throw up if I ate right away lol.

Well it's been shown that the 1 hour metabolic window is actually 24-36 hours in length, so anytime within that time frame would be ideal.
Also about the whole insulin/HGH thing, I wouldn't worry about it too much, I just mentioned it because the person I quoted is taking their protein separately from their carbs.

I keep reading/hearing from running literature, running websites and runners that Chocolate Milk is the best thing after a run.

    Again from a fitness magazine
    http://www.fitnessmagazine.com/recipes/healthy-eating/superfoods/chocolate-milk-after-workout/

They do site a study, but a single study.

I personally drink propel zero after/during my runs but once I start (half)marathon training I'm probably going to start having a chocolate milk after my longer runs.

I just started having a cup of 1% chocolate milk after workouts. I don't know if it really makes a difference or not, but chocolate milk is really freaking delicious.

This^. It is not necessary to consume any nutrient immediately pwo. If you want to, remember that whey is extremely insulinogenic as well, not just carbs. The release of insulin halts the catabolic breakdown caused by resistence training. The longer you go without consuming any food, the larger the anabolic response will be. It is mental *kitten* for a natural athlete to try and manipulate hormone levels to achieve some kind of significanf beneficial result.

This. Someone could obviously have a meal planned shortly after a workout if they feel compelled, personally I reaaly don't feel like eating right after.

Uhm, yes you do need to eat after working out. Especially if you did strength training.

You really do not need to eat - it is personal preference as to how close to lifting you eat.

you are not wrong. But I do disagree because I've had experience with different post-workout methods (fasting 3 - 4 hours post-workout, eating slow carbs, high carbs, timing, etc.) what I find what works for me to recover a lot faster is the timing or fast absorbing proteins and amino acids, and timing the carbs. Prior to trying this I haven't been able to train twice a day 6 days a week hitting every body part once every 3 days. But like I said, you are not incorrect, there are many ways to achieve a great physique. It's just what works to best for my physiology. That's why I disagree.
